Job Description
The Principal Utility Electrical Engineer at New Leaf Energy leads the technical design and strategic initiatives for utility-scale renewable energy projects, collaborating with internal teams and external partners to develop innovative solutions and ensure project success.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead technical discussions and develop engineering strategies for utility-scale projects
- Evaluate utility deliverables and provide guidance to advance project development
- Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to support project success
- Manage third-party engineering firms to meet project deadlines and standards
- Create, maintain, and implement technical standards, tools, and processes
- Review and stamp work of other engineers as a professional engineer
- Support project finance negotiations and post-closing activities
- Train and onboard new team members and incorporate feedback into project designs
- Lead strategic initiatives and serve as subject matter expert for regional projects
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or similar relevant study
- 10 years of power engineering experience, with significant experience in development business
- Professional engineer (PE) license or the ability to review and stamp other UEE work
- Extensive experience performing power system calculations using software programs
- Strong aptitude for creative problem-solving
- Advanced understanding of power system and design engineering principles, including inverter design, system grounding, BESS design, protection, etc.
- Strong understanding of interconnection policy and regulatory environment in multiple regions
- Ability to lead internal strategic initiatives with minimal direction
- Ability to create new standards and processes using the NLE process implementation map
- Ability to serve as the subject matter expert for the Regional Team and act as an internal consultant to assist with strategic decision-making
- Ability to create and execute standard work that supports the Regional team and develops strategy for a particular region
- Ability to seamlessly incorporate feedback and input from Policy and Finance team members into current bid set designs
- Ability to dynamically support project finance during MIPA negotiations and post-closing (7C-MIPA and MIPA-Closeout)
- Ability to manage third-party engineering firms to deliver on NLE deadlines, including scoping, reviewing, and holding them accountable
- Ability to create and maintain technical standards and tools
- Ability to develop and mentor less experienced engineers
- Ability to lead cross-collaborative standard initiatives using the NLE process implementation map
- Ability to create and execute standard work that supports regional strategy
- Ability to educate and train others on the main concepts of the business, including mastery of the New Leaf VSM and development strategy
- Ability to support project deadlines, milestones, and urgencies
- Excellent organizational and self-starting skills
- Strong project management and operational skills
- Ability to work independently and proactively
- Excellent communication skills to collaborate with internal teams and external industry professionals
