Job Description
The Research Chemist at HRL's Scaled Nanotechnology department develops multifunctional materials and coatings through chemical synthesis and material processing, utilizing analytical tools to analyze results, with a focus on scaling technologies from discovery to commercialization.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform chemical reactions and polymerizations at benchtop and pilot scale
- Set up and execute chemical synthesis reactions (organic, sol-gel, polymer, organometallic chemistry)
- Develop material processing techniques to produce functional composites
- Document, analyze, and report experimental results to the project manager
- Operate and interpret data from analytical tools such as DSC, FTIR, UV-VIS, SEM, and TGA
- Maintain laboratory stocks, supplies, and ensure calibration of lab instruments
- Ensure laboratory safety and proper handling of chemicals
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or related field.
- Experience with good lab practices documentation and safety procedures is essential.
- Experience in a wet chemistry lab environment and synthesizing chemical compounds in a research environment is desired.
- Experience performing chemical reactions and polymerizations at the benchtop and pilot-scale, including setting up and performing chemical synthesis reactions such as organic, sol-gel, polymer, and organometallic chemistry.
- Experience with material processing development to produce functional composites, along with documenting, analyzing, and reporting experimental results to the project manager.
- Experience operating analytical tools such as DSC, FTIR, UV-VIS, SEM, and TGA and interpreting the results.
- Ability to perform safely in a laboratory environment using materials synthesis and analysis equipment.
- Ability to document and communicate results effectively.
- Ability to exercise safe handling of chemicals.
- Willingness and ability to work at the Malibu site for 40 hours per week.
- U.S. Person status as defined by 22 C.F.R. 120.62, including U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, to meet export control compliance requirements.
