Job Description

A summer internship role focused on supporting the design, integration, testing, and analysis of drone-mounted sensors, involving hands-on work with mechanical, electronic, and software systems in a mission-driven research environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support design, simulation, integration, and testing of mechanical, thermal, and electronic assemblies for drone-mounted sensors
  • Perform finite element analysis (FEA) of CAD components and assemblies, and SPICE simulations for electronics and RF subsystems
  • Prepare design specifications, component drawings, assembly instructions, and interface control documents
  • Integrate and validate system hardware in laboratory environments
  • Contribute to software development for monitoring, controlling, and data acquisition from RF subsystems
  • Assist senior staff in the product development cycle and participate in system design and analysis

Requirements

  • Students currently enrolled in upper-level undergraduate coursework in Mechanical, Electrical, Electromechanical, Mechatronics, or other engineering related disciplines.
  • Coursework covering mechatronics design is desired.
  • Hands-on experience in design, integration, and testing of mechanical assemblies and electronic systems.
  • Hands-on experience integrating and testing mechanical and electrical system components.
  • Experience with software for mechanical hardware design such as SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor.
  • Experience with electrical design software such as Eagle CAD or Altium Designer.
  • Experience with finite element analysis software such as Ansys or COMSOL.
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or LabVIEW.
  • Knowledge of mechanical design principles from the component to subsystem level, including GD&T.
  • Familiarity with electrical engineering design software and standard electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and signal generators.
  • Working knowledge of electronic parts and components, including connectors, cables, printed circuit boards, and device packages.
  • Basic understanding of electronic and/or RF systems.
  • Must be able to work for extended periods while standing or sitting at a computer workstation or engineering workstations.
  • Must be able to safely use complex electronic equipment.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Sufficient mobility, visual and hearing acuity, and manual dexterity to safely work with hand tools within a laboratory environment.
  • Willingness to interact with colleagues and work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a US Government security clearance.
  • Must be enrolled in an educational program following the end of the internship.

Benefits & Perks

Compensation range: 30 - 35 (determined by educational year)
80 hours of Sick time
Assignment length: 8 to 12 weeks with multiple start dates
One-time stipend for relocation in Malibu, CA
