Job Description
A Lab Automation Engineer responsible for designing, building, and operating experimental systems to support materials research in automotive, aerospace, and defense industries, including data collection, equipment calibration, and laboratory management.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate experimental systems and apparatus to measure material processes and effects under various conditions.
- Perform experiments, collect, validate, and analyze data using complex experimental equipment.
- Collaborate with scientists and engineers to understand experimental needs and develop suitable equipment.
- Manage laboratory equipment upgrades and perform troubleshooting and maintenance as needed.
Requirements
- Must have a BS or MS degree in chemistry, physics, or engineering.
- Must be capable of performing extended analysis at computer workstations.
- Must be able to work safely in electrical testing and wet chemistry laboratories.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance.
- Calibrate and validate both commercial and home-built experimental equipment.
- Functional use of SolidWorks or other CAD software.
- Must be able to work well in a dynamic team environment with several ongoing projects at once.
- Perform experiments, collect data, validate data, and perform data analysis from experiments using complex experimental equipment.
- Manage upgrades of laboratories with HRL facilities, including acting as the custodian of equipment such as glove boxes, furnaces, and possibly electron microscopes.
- Perform troubleshooting when equipment is broken and call for external maintenance as needed.
