Job Description

This position involves leading advanced research and development in optical materials and atomistic simulations, utilizing computational modeling, machine learning, and experimental techniques to discover and develop new materials and photonic devices in an interdisciplinary environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead interdisciplinary R&D initiatives in optical materials, spectroscopy, and atomistic simulations.
  • Develop and lead computational platforms for materials discovery and modeling.
  • Apply advanced materials modeling techniques, including atomistic simulations and machine learning methods.
  • Collaborate with chemists, physicists, and engineers to integrate modeling with experimental work.
  • Generate research ideas, write proposals, and lead project teams for funded programs.
  • Interpret modeling results using spectroscopy and laser experiments to support research objectives.

Requirements

  • PhD in Chemistry, Physics, or Engineering with a strong emphasis on optical material device modeling, atomistic simulations (e.g., DFT), and computational characterization.
  • Expert-level ability in materials modeling, particularly in understanding at least one of the following areas: light-matter interaction across a broad range of materials and photonic devices, magnetic property prediction, or polymer modeling.
  • Excellent theoretical foundation in atomistic modeling and strong knowledge of current and emerging machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques relevant to materials development.
  • Strong experience in atomistic material simulation within frameworks such as density functional theory (DFT) or molecular dynamics.
  • Highly proficient in programming languages like Python or C for data analysis and integration with simulation workflows.
  • Must be capable of performing extended analysis at computer workstations.
  • Must be able to work safely in an optical, electrical testing, and wet chemistry laboratory.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance.
