Job Description
The Automation Engineer at HRL Laboratories is responsible for designing, building, and operating experimental systems and equipment in collaboration with scientists and engineers, to support research in advanced materials and technologies for aerospace, automotive, and defense applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with chemists, physicists, and engineers to develop custom equipment and material processing hardware
- Design, build, and operate demonstration systems and experimental apparatus simulating aerospace and automotive environments
- Develop systems to control fluid flow, electrochemical processes, high-temperature processing, and material joining
- Perform experiments, collect and analyze data using complex instrumentation
- Calibrate and validate experimental equipment to ensure data accuracy
- Manage laboratory upgrades and maintain critical equipment such as glove boxes, furnaces, and microscopes
- Troubleshoot laboratory hardware and coordinate external maintenance
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, or Chemistry with a minimum of 3 years of experience or a Master's degree in Engineering, Physics, or Chemistry.
- Functional proficiency in SolidWorks or equivalent CAD software.
- Functional use of Python, LabVIEW, or other programming languages to automate experiments and control data collection.
- Hands-on experience in a wet chemistry laboratory, including the formulation and compounding of materials and paints.
- Proven ability to thrive in a dynamic, multi-project team environment with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be capable of performing extended analysis at computer workstations.
- Must be able to work safely in electrical testing and wet chemistry laboratories.
- U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance.
