Job Description
The Senior or Staff Mechanical Engineer will lead the design, analysis, and integration of mechanical structures and electronic components for autonomous vehicles, supporting low to high volume production and collaborating across teams to ensure high-quality vehicle builds and system reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical design analysis from ideation to drawing release.
- Own and perform analysis of subsystems or complex component assemblies on and off vehicles.
- Conduct finite element analyses to validate designs against use cases.
- Collaborate on design for manufacturing, assembly, and serviceability efforts.
- Create detailed calculations for components such as joints and seals.
- Perform tolerance stack-up analysis and apply GD&T strategies.
- Develop cooling solutions for sensors and electronic components.
- Manage bill of materials (BOM) and coordinate with procurement and manufacturing.
- Build and bring-up prototype vehicles following engineering standards.
- Mentor and develop the mechanical engineering team by establishing standards and processes.
Requirements
- 5 years of experience designing analyzing complex mechanical structures and integration of hardware.
- An engineering degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics or an equivalent field.
- Delivered multiple parts, subsystem s or system s to production successfully.
- Experience in automotive or transportation sector, dealing with larger assemblies and parts.
- Excellent skills for 3D CAD design 2D drafting per ASME Y14.5, with SolidWorks preferred.
- Experience in FE analysis, including vibration analysis (bonus).
- Experience working in an engineering process environment, e.g., using PDM/PLM, creating ECOs, generating BOMs, configuration management, etc.
- Expertise in creating Aluminum steel designs, with a focus on sheet metal fabrication, welded design, extrusions, and machined design.
- Expertise in tolerance stacking, especially linear simple 2D stacks.
- Working knowledge of ISO 26262 and its relevance to the integration of electrical and electronic components.
- Expertise in component selection and specification of seals, fasteners, materials, coatings, etc.
- Hands-on engineer able and willing to use hand tools including drills, brake presses, oscillating saws, grinders, rotary tools, etc.
- Ability to perform detailed calculations of selected components such as bolted, welded, bonded joints, seals, etc.
- Ability to perform tolerance stack-up analysis for designs and use appropriate GD&T strategy.
- Ability to build and bring-up prototype vehicles following best engineering practices standards.
- Lead, mentor, and grow the mechanical engineering discipline by creating standards and processes.
