Job Description

Mid-Level Engineers, Scientists, and Technicians support research projects for the EPA by developing, designing, and executing technical studies in atmospheric sciences, environmental measurement, and air quality modeling, while collaborating across multidisciplinary teams and mentoring junior staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and optimize solutions for research projects
  • Execute technical projects related to environmental research
  • Mentor junior team members in technical tasks
  • Prepare work plans, quality assurance project plans (QAPPs), health and safety plans, and technical reports

Requirements

  • Must have a strong technical foundation in engineering, science, or related fields relevant to research support for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Research and Development.
  • Must have experience in designing, developing, and optimizing solutions for technical projects in a research environment.
  • Must have the ability to execute technical projects related to decontamination, consequence management studies, measurement methods development and validation, source emission characterization, and atmospheric sciences research.
  • Must have experience in data collection research in atmospheric sciences, physical, chemical, biological, toxicological, and human and ecological exposure development, evaluation, and application of air quality simulation modeling.
  • Must have experience working in specialized laboratories and machine shops, including fabrication machine shops, metrology laboratories, and analytical and microbiological labs.
  • Must have the ability to prepare work plans, quality assurance project plans (QAPPs), health and safety plans, and technical reports for research projects.
  • Must have a strong problem-solving ability and the ability to collaborate effectively across teams to drive innovation.
  • Must be highly motivated with the skills to prioritize, perform, and communicate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must have at least 2 years of relevant experience in engineering, science, or technician roles related to environmental research or laboratory work.
  • Must have a relevant educational background, such as a bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, science, or a related technical field.
  • Must be able to mentor junior team members as part of the role.
  • Must be able to work in specialized laboratory environments and machine shops, including fabrication and metrology laboratories.
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of working in laboratory and machine shop environments, including handling equipment and materials as required.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to prepare technical reports and project documentation.
