Job Description

The Mechanical Engineer will design and analyze mechanical components and systems for energy storage solutions, collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure safety, performance, and regulatory compliance as e-Zinc advances its innovative battery technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical components and enclosures for battery cells and packs, including structural, thermal, and electrical routing aspects
  • Create detailed 3D models, drawings, and BOMs using SolidWorks and perform design validation through FEA and tolerance analysis
  • Collaborate with electrical, controls, electrochemical, and manufacturing teams to ensure design integration and manufacturability
  • Lead discussions with external vendors and fabricators for custom component development and assembly
  • Drive the development of test fixtures, jigs, and assembly processes for pack and BESS validation
  • Support safety and regulatory compliance testing according to standards such as UL, IEC, and CE

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
  • 5 years of mechanical design experience in energy storage, automotive, robotics, or industrial systems
  • Registered with Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO), or eligible for registration
  • Demonstrated expertise in mechanical system design for high-power devices, thermal management, or structural analysis
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, PDM, and simulation tools such as ANSYS, CFX, or equivalent
  • Hands-on experience with prototyping, testing, and working with external vendors and fabricators
  • Strong working knowledge of Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and materials selection for mechanical systems
  • Ability to create detailed 3D models, engineering drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs)
  • Experience in conducting tolerance stack-ups and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to validate design integrity and performance
  • Experience in selecting and qualifying materials and components against thermal, structural, environmental, and regulatory requirements
  • Support safety and compliance testing to applicable regulatory standards such as UL, IEC, CE
  • Experience in leading mechanical design of battery cells and packs, including enclosures, interconnects, and structural components
  • Experience in designing external enclosures for DC-BESS units, covering component placement, fixing and racking strategy, fluid and electrical routing, and ensuring IP compliance
  • Experience in driving engineering sample assembly and participating in hands-on functional testing
  • Experience in leading discussions with external vendors and fabricators for custom component designs and assemblies
  • Ability to lead and contribute to design reviews, DFMEA, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Support development of test fixtures, jigs, and assembly processes to support pack and BESS validation
  • Support safety and compliance testing to applicable regulatory standards (UL, IEC, CE)
