Job Description
A senior cloud engineer responsible for developing and deploying scalable geospatial and AI-driven Earth observation data services, focusing on backend systems, data pipelines, and cloud-native architectures to support open science and collaboration with European research organizations.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop scalable geospatial cloud-native services and data pipelines
- Write and deploy production-grade Python code for data services
- Build and maintain reliable, automated backend workflows
- Transform research prototypes into user-centric, maintainable services
- Guide technical direction and collaborate with partners on project scope and innovation
- Engage with open-source communities, contribute to standards, and document architecture
- Support team growth through knowledge sharing and sustainable software practices
Requirements
- Must reside in and be authorized to work in one of the ESA member states, with the option to work from the company's office in Lisbon, Portugal.
- At least 5 years of software engineering experience, with a minimum of 3 years focusing on data-intensive backend systems and building production code in collaborative team environments.
- Expertise in Python, including strong proficiency with modern Python development practices, rigorous testing, and CI/CD workflows.
- Experience deploying services on cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or OVH, including familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and infrastructure as code tools like Terraform or CDK.
- Ability to develop scalable geospatial services, including writing clean, production-grade code and architecting data services leveraging formats like STAC, Zarr, and Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFFs (COGs).
- Experience building and maintaining data-intensive pipelines, integrating tools like vector search, and ensuring automated workflows are reliable and accurate.
- Ability to transform research prototypes into maintainable, test-covered services aligned with real user needs.
- Strong product and communication skills, including the ability to think strategically beyond tickets, clearly communicate decisions in pull requests, and discuss technical trade-offs effectively with colleagues and partners.
