A Project Engineer responsible for site design, energy modeling, and technical coordination for utility-scale solar and battery storage projects, ensuring optimized layouts, accurate energy forecasts, and compliance throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Develop in-house site layouts, PV energy models, BESS energy models, and performance calculations.
Design ground-mounted solar PV systems, focusing on site layout, array configuration, and civil land development.
Review project documentation, including zoning, permitting, geotechnical, hydrology, and environmental reports, to ensure design compliance.
Produce engineering plans, site layout drawings, and construction details using AutoCAD Civil3D.
Support pre-construction with site design deliverables and energy forecast documentation during EPC RFP process.
Coordinate with third-party engineering firms across civil, structural, geotechnical, electrical, and survey disciplines.
Build and maintain BESS energy models for dispatch strategies, degradation, and revenue optimization.
Develop, QA/QC, and maintain PVSyst and other energy modeling simulations, including bifacial, shading, and soiling analyses.
Evaluate meteorological data sources and loss analysis methods to produce accurate energy forecasts.
Conduct technical reviews and risk assessments of site layouts, shading, setbacks, and grading challenges.
Act as the point of contact between internal teams and external engineering consultants.
Support maintenance and improvement of technical specifications for PV modules, inverters, racking, BESS equipment, and procurement contracts.
Requirements
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering, or a closely related technical field
At least 2 years of experience in site design and/or energy modeling for utility-scale solar PV and/or Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in the renewable energy sector
Proficiency in PVSyst for solar energy modeling, including bifacial modeling, shading analysis, soiling degradation assumptions, and P50/P90 energy yield estimates, with documentation of modeling assumptions for internal and lender review
Experience with BESS modeling platforms such as HOMER, Energy Toolbase, or equivalent
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Project, and familiarity with project management tools such as Procore, SiteTracker, or similar
Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD Civil3D for site layout design, drafting, grading, and production of construction documents in a renewable energy project context
Ability to develop, perform QA/QC, and maintain energy models evaluating dispatch strategies, state-of-charge profiles, degradation, and revenue optimization, including evaluating and applying meteorological data sources such as Solargis, NASA POWER, SolarAnywhere
Experience in reading, interpreting, and understanding project documentation including City and County zoning and permitting requirements, geotechnical studies, hydrology analyses, wetland delineations, and environmental reports, and producing compliant design solutions
Ability to produce high-quality engineering plans, site layout drawings, array block diagrams, grading analysis, topographical exhibits, drainage assessments, and other AutoCAD Civil3D deliverables supporting site feasibility and permitting
Experience reviewing scopes of work, deliverables, and schedules for engineering consultants, and ensuring all engineering activities align with project timelines and budgets
Support in-site design deliverables and energy forecast documentation during the EPC RFP process through contract execution
Coordinate with third-party engineering firms across disciplines including civil, structural, geotechnical, electrical, and survey to advance site designs
Review scopes of work, deliverables, and schedules for engineering consultants
Build and maintain BESS energy models to evaluate dispatch strategies, state-of-charge profiles, degradation, and revenue optimization
Provide technical support to Supply Chain for evaluation of new BESS, Power Conversion Systems (PCS) technologies, PV inverters, and medium-voltage transformers
Develop, perform QA/QC, and maintain PVSyst simulation models for solar PV projects, including bifacial modeling, shading analysis, soiling degradation assumptions, and P50/P90 energy yield estimates, with documentation
Evaluate and apply meteorological data sources such as Solargis, NASA POWER, SolarAnywhere, and loss analysis methodologies to produce defensible energy forecasts, understanding the technical and financial implications of modeling assumptions
Conduct technical review and risk analysis of site layouts, identifying design conflicts, shading impacts, setback compliance, and grading challenges that affect energy yield or constructability
Ensure work is executed in accordance with contracts and policies
Develop effective relationships with internal departments, contractors, suppliers, landowners, and other stakeholders
