A BESS Electrical Engineer responsible for overseeing the technical operations, performance optimization, and compliance of utility-scale LFP battery energy storage systems within ERCOT grid operations, ensuring safety, reliability, and contractual adherence.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee daily technical operations of utility-scale LFP BESS assets, including performance monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimization.
Understand and manage LFP cell, rack, and container behavior, including degradation, operating limits, and charging/discharging strategies.
Configure and tune site control systems, including plant controllers, PCS, and BMS interfaces, to ensure safe and compliant operation.
Support commissioning, performance testing, and root cause analysis of BESS or inverter-based resources.
Assist with ERCOT market integration, including understanding protocols, participation models, and operational constraints.
Translate contractual requirements into technical procedures, work structures, and validation tests.
Develop and maintain operating procedures, runbooks, and emergency protocols aligned with contractual and regulatory standards.
Analyze operational data to identify performance issues, root causes, and implement corrective actions.
Collaborate with EPCs, OEMs, and control vendors to implement control logic updates, firmware upgrades, and performance improvements.
Provide technical input for outage planning, maintenance, and lifecycle management of BESS assets.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Controls, or related engineering field.
Minimum of 4 years of direct experience with LFP based battery energy storage systems at utility or large C&I scale.
Demonstrated experience working with BESS assets in ERCOT planning, interconnection, operations, or market participation.
Strong understanding of LFP battery operations, including State of Charge (SoC), State of Health (SoH) management, thermal management, protection, and safety concepts.
Hands-on experience with site control systems including plant controllers, Power Conversion System (PCS) controls, Battery Management System (BMS), and SCADA, including reviewing setpoints, control modes, and coordination between devices.
Ability to interpret and operationalize contractual documents such as EPC contracts, OEM warranties, performance guarantees, availability, and RTE requirements into practical workflows and KPIs.
Proficiency with data analysis tools such as Excel, Python, or similar for analyzing operational and performance data.
Experience with commissioning, performance testing, or root cause analysis of BESS or inverter-based resources.
Experience with high voltage substations, protection schemes, and grid code compliance for inverter-based resources.
Knowledge of ERCOT interconnection and market rules relevant to battery storage, including telemetry, performance testing, participation models, and operational constraints.
Ability to translate contractual requirements related to EPC, OEM, interconnection, offtake, performance guarantees, and warranties into clear technical work structures, procedures, and acceptance validation tests.
Experience in developing and maintaining operating procedures, Methods of Procedure (MOPs), Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs), and runbooks for both normal and abnormal operating conditions, aligned with contractual and regulatory requirements.
Experience analyzing site data such as SCADA, historian logs, and event logs to identify performance gaps, root causes of recurring issues, and recommend corrective actions.
Ability to collaborate with EPCs, OEMs, control vendors, and SCADA providers to implement control logic changes, firmware upgrades, and performance improvements.
Supportive of outage planning, maintenance strategies, and lifecycle planning for LFP BESS assets.
Ability to prepare clear technical documentation, reports, and presentations on system performance and compliance for internal and external stakeholders.
