Job Description

The Staff Open Innovation Engineer at Commonwealth Fusion Systems is responsible for building and managing external innovation partnerships with research institutions, government agencies, and private entities to accelerate fusion energy development through strategic collaborations and technical leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Identify, recruit, and activate external researchers, institutions, and programs to support CFS's roadmap and risk mitigation.
Represent CFS to national laboratories, universities, government agencies, international fusion programs, and private partners to build strategic collaborations.
Develop and manage funded, milestone-driven technical collaborations to address complex engineering challenges.
Collaborate with CFS and partner technical and business leads to drive external programs forward and shape strategic decisions.

Requirements

Deep technical fluency in relevant engineering or scientific fields related to fusion energy or advanced research.
Experience in strategic relationship-building with external organizations such as National Laboratories, universities, government agencies, international fusion programs, or private partners.
Proven ability to identify, recruit, and activate researchers, institutions, and programs to accelerate research and development roadmaps.
Experience in developing and managing funded, milestone-driven technical collaborations that address complex engineering problems.
Ability to represent an organization externally and develop relationships that lead to technical collaborations and partnerships.
Experience collaborating directly with technical and business leads to drive programs forward and shape strategic decisions.
Demonstrated ability to operate at the intersection of technical depth and strategic relationship management.
Compliance with U.S. laws concerning the export of controlled or protected technologies or information (Export Control Laws), with any employment offer contingent on this compliance.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to evolving priorities.
Strong communication skills to develop and present technical and strategic information to diverse stakeholders.
