Job Description
The Senior Manager, Materials and Process Engineering at Commonwealth Fusion Systems leads multiple engineering teams focused on materials selection, processing, and validation to support the development of fusion power devices, ensuring materials meet the unique challenges posed by fusion environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a multidisciplinary engineering team focused on metals, alloys, welding, composites, coatings, and ceramics.
- Support design, development, and validation of materials and processing routes for fusion power components.
- Maintain and develop standard engineering practices, including materials process specifications and materials libraries.
- Provide centralized engineering resources across design and development projects related to fusion reactors.
Requirements
- Experience managing a functional group of multiple engineering discipline teams including metals and alloys, welding and joining, composites and polymers, coatings and special processes, and ceramics.
- Ability to maintain and mature standard engineering practices in Materials and Process Engineering, including the generation of materials process specifications, the definition of design materials allowables, and the maintenance of materials libraries.
- Proven leadership skills in managing engineering teams serving as a centralized matrix resource across engineering design teams and development projects.
- Strong understanding of materials selection, validation, and measurement of materials and their properties in the context of fusion energy applications.
- Experience conducting research and development to develop new materials and processes for fusion power deployment.
- Knowledge of materials challenges posed by fusion devices, including neutron fluxes produced by deuterium-tritium fusion, high heat loads, molten salt coolant systems, complex component topologies, high magnetic fields, and high mechanical loading in cryogenic conditions.
- Compliance with U.S. laws concerning the export of controlled or protected technologies or information, including Export Control Laws.
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment driven by values of integrity, execution, impact, and self-critique.
