A Mechanical Engineer specializing in cable magnets, responsible for designing, analyzing, sourcing, testing, and supporting the fabrication of complex magnet components for fusion energy systems, working closely with cross-functional teams throughout the product lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Design components supporting the primary magnet systems for plasma shaping and driving.
Develop designs through all product lifecycle stages, including CAD modeling and analysis.
Support sourcing, vendor engagement, and fabrication processes such as composite layups, welding, forming, and machining.
Assist in testing, production, and peer review of magnet components.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet project requirements and broader organizational needs.
Present design concepts and technical solutions to peers and leadership to demonstrate objectives are met and resolve concerns.
Requirements
A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
Experience in designing mechanical components for systems operating in extreme environments such as high vacuum and near absolute zero temperatures.
Proficiency in all stages of the product lifecycle including blank-page design, CAD modeling, analysis, sourcing, vendor support, testing support, production support, and peer review.
Ability to design components that support primary magnet systems used to shape and drive plasma in fusion devices.
Experience with fabrication methods including composite layups, welding, forming, and machining.
Capability to work closely with teammates and peers on adjacent teams to ensure designs meet project requirements and broader organizational needs.
Experience presenting designs to peers and leadership, including executive leadership, to demonstrate that design objectives have been met and to resolve technical concerns.
Compliance with U.S. export control laws concerning the export of controlled or protected technologies or information.
