Job Description
A System Software Engineer responsible for developing and optimizing GCC and LLVM compiler toolchains, runtimes, and related tooling on Ubuntu, with a focus on modern C and C++ programming, to enhance the developer experience and ensure Ubuntu remains a leading platform for software development in cloud, data centers, and containers.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and optimize GCC and LLVM runtimes, tooling, and ecosystems for Ubuntu.
- Ensure high-quality integration of compiler toolchains into Ubuntu across various platforms.
- Collaborate with team members on design discussions, code reviews, and architecture improvements.
- Package and distribute compiler tools and related software for Debian and Ubuntu.
- Debug and resolve issues related to compiler runtimes, tooling, and integration.
- Work with other teams to enhance Ubuntu's performance, security, and user experience related to compiler toolchains.
Requirements
- Relevant experience with GCC or LLVM, ideally in the world of cloud-native software and Linux
- Experience in packaging software for Debian and Ubuntu
- Experience working with Linux distributions and distribution engineering
- Experience with software packaging and distribution mechanisms
- Understanding of build systems and toolchains, including for cross-compilation
- Proficiency in writing high-quality code to create new features, debug issues, and fix them
- Ability to review code produced by other engineers and participate in design reviews
- Ability to collaborate proactively with a distributed team and discuss design ideas
- Excellent competencies in modern C and C++ programming languages
- Strong competencies in Linux distributions, software architectures, and open source software
- Bachelor's degree in a technical subject or a compelling narrative about an alternative chosen path
- Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university
- Passion for technology and working with brilliant people
- Strong soft skills including being passionate, curious, flexible, articulate, accountable, enterprising, thoughtful, and self-motivated
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events, with trips up to two weeks long
