A Software Maintenance Engineer role focused on troubleshooting, fixing, and upstreaming issues in Linux-based infrastructure and open source software such as Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, and Kubernetes, supporting enterprise customers and contributing to the open source community.
Key Responsibilities
Resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes
Maintain a close working relationship with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams
Participate in upstream communities to develop bug fixes, backport patches, and seek inclusion
Review code produced by other engineers
Troubleshoot and drive issues to resolution with workarounds, guidance, and bug fixes
Develop upstream bug fixes and collaborate with the open source community
Requirements
Experience with Linux and open source software
Experience with at least one of Python, Go, C or C++ on Linux
Background in Computer Science, STEM or similar academic field with an exceptional academic track record
Willingness to learn unfamiliar technology and deep-dive difficult issues
Ability to work productively at any level of the open source stack including kernel, virtualization (KVM), containerization (Docker, LXC, LXD), storage (Ceph, Linux filesystems), networking (OVS, OVN, Core networking), OpenStack, Kubernetes, and open source applications
Ability to resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes
Experience working with upstream communities to develop bug fixes, backport patches, and contribute to upstream projects
Ability to review code produced by other engineers
Demonstrate good judgment in technical methods and techniques
Effective time management and prioritization skills to manage workload against priorities
Ability to participate in team discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation
Maintain clear, technical, and concise communications
Willingness to work remotely and travel internationally up to 10% of work time for team meetings, events, and conferences
Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events
