Job Description

A Software Maintenance Engineer role focused on troubleshooting, fixing, and upstreaming issues in Linux-based infrastructure and open source software such as Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, and Kubernetes, with opportunities to work across various layers of the technology stack in a remote, collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Resolve complex customer issues related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes
  • Maintain a close working relationship with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams
  • Participate in upstream open source communities
  • Develop bug fixes, backport patches, and collaborate with upstream projects for inclusion
  • Review code produced by other engineers
  • Troubleshoot and drive issues to resolution with workarounds, guidance, and bug fixes
  • Prioritize work and manage time effectively
  • Contribute to process, tools, and documentation improvements
  • Communicate technical information clearly and concisely

Requirements

  • Experience with Linux and open source software
  • Experience with at least one of Python, Go, C or C++ on Linux
  • Background in Computer Science, STEM or similar academic field with an exceptional academic track record
  • Willingness to learn unfamiliar technology and deep-dive difficult issues
  • Prior experience resolving complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes
  • Ability to maintain a close working relationship with Canonical s Field, Support and product engineering teams
  • Ability to develop bug fixes, backport patches, and work with upstream for inclusion
  • Ability to review code produced by other engineers
  • Demonstrate good judgment in technical methods and techniques
  • Effective time management and prioritization skills
  • Participate in team discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation
  • Maintain clear, technical, and concise communications
  • Work from home and travel internationally up to 10% of work time for team meetings, events, and conferences
  • Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events
  • Ability to work productively at any level of the open source stack, including kernel and user space
  • Ability to troubleshoot and fix issues in software used by millions across the world, including upstream bug fixes
  • Ability to work in a remote environment with teams in all time zones
