Job Description
A Software Maintenance Engineer role focused on troubleshooting, fixing, and upstreaming issues in Linux-based infrastructure and open source software such as Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, and Kubernetes, with opportunities to work across various layers of the technology stack in a remote, collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Resolve complex customer issues related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes
- Maintain a close working relationship with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams
- Participate in upstream open source communities
- Develop bug fixes, backport patches, and collaborate with upstream projects for inclusion
- Review code produced by other engineers
- Troubleshoot and drive issues to resolution with workarounds, guidance, and bug fixes
- Prioritize work and manage time effectively
- Contribute to process, tools, and documentation improvements
- Communicate technical information clearly and concisely
Requirements
- Experience with Linux and open source software
- Experience with at least one of Python, Go, C or C++ on Linux
- Background in Computer Science, STEM or similar academic field with an exceptional academic track record
- Willingness to learn unfamiliar technology and deep-dive difficult issues
- Prior experience resolving complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes
- Ability to maintain a close working relationship with Canonical s Field, Support and product engineering teams
- Ability to develop bug fixes, backport patches, and work with upstream for inclusion
- Ability to review code produced by other engineers
- Demonstrate good judgment in technical methods and techniques
- Effective time management and prioritization skills
- Participate in team discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation
- Maintain clear, technical, and concise communications
- Work from home and travel internationally up to 10% of work time for team meetings, events, and conferences
- Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events
- Ability to work productively at any level of the open source stack, including kernel and user space
- Ability to troubleshoot and fix issues in software used by millions across the world, including upstream bug fixes
- Ability to work in a remote environment with teams in all time zones
