A Software Maintenance Engineer role focused on troubleshooting, fixing, and upstreaming issues in Linux-based infrastructure and open source software such as Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, and Kubernetes, supporting enterprise customers and contributing to the open source community.
Key Responsibilities
Resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes
Maintain a close working relationship with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams
Participate in upstream communities to develop bug fixes, backport patches, and seek upstream inclusion
Review code produced by other engineers
Troubleshoot and drive issues to resolution with workarounds, guidance, and bug fixes
Develop upstream bug fixes and collaborate with the open source community
Prioritize work and manage time effectively to address critical issues
Contribute to process, tools, and documentation improvements through team discussions
Requirements
Experience with Linux and open source software
Experience with at least one of Python, Go, C or C++ on Linux
Background in Computer Science, STEM or similar academic field with an exceptional academic track record
Willingness to learn unfamiliar technology and deep-dive difficult issues
Ability to work productively at any level of the open source stack including kernel, and in a wide range of programming languages
Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes
Experience with developing bug fixes, backport patches, and working with upstream communities for inclusion
Ability to review code produced by other engineers
Demonstrate good judgment in technical methods and techniques
Effective time management and prioritization skills to manage work against priorities
Clear, technical, and concise communication skills
Willingness to work remotely and travel internationally up to 10% of work time for team meetings, events, and conferences
Ability to develop upstream bug fixes and drive issues to resolution with workarounds, guidance, and bug fixes
Participate in upstream communities and collaborate with Canonical’s Field, Support, and product engineering teams
