Job Description

A leadership role in Sustaining Engineering at Canonical, responsible for managing a global team of engineers focused on improving and maintaining open source software across various platforms, including Linux, cloud, and container technologies, while ensuring customer satisfaction and fostering a collaborative engineering culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a distributed team of engineers, providing coaching, mentorship, and career development guidance.
  • Ensure timely delivery of bug fixes, patches, and technical solutions across various open source software stacks.
  • Support and improve software quality through testing methodologies and maintainable code practices.
  • Collaborate with other teams, stakeholders, and management to align on strategy and execution.
  • Demonstrate technical leadership by guiding problem resolution, bug fixes, and software development efforts.
  • Set and manage expectations with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Advocate for modern software development practices and foster a collaborative engineering culture.
  • Contribute to customer interactions, representing Canonical positively.

Requirements

  • Technical leadership and a solid background in software development are a must, so that you are able to help your team members grow professionally.
  • Professional software delivery experience using C, C++, Go, Python, or similar programming languages.
  • Experience with version control systems such as git.
  • Experience with debugging tools such as gdb, crash, or other debugging tools.
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to testing methodologies and maintainable code quality.
  • Experience with Linux, with a preference towards Ubuntu.
  • Experience with Open Source and Open Source Business Models.
  • People management experience in a support organization is a strong plus.
  • Manage and lead a distributed team of engineers, including hiring, coaching, mentoring, providing feedback, and career development guidance.
  • Support timely delivery of bug fixes, patches, and other technical solutions to address business needs in a variety of technology fields, including but not limited to Ubuntu, OpenStack, Ceph, Kubernetes, Juju, MAAS.
  • Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders.
  • Advocate and advance modern software development practices.
  • Grow a healthy, collaborative engineering culture in line with the company value.
  • Work from home with global travel up to 10% for internal and external events.
