Job Description

The Engineering Director at Canonical is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing multiple engineering teams across various domains, driving technical excellence, managing talent, and ensuring the successful delivery of open source software products in a remote, global environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead multiple engineering teams and develop engineering managers
  • Hire, coach, mentor, and provide career development for engineers
  • Set high standards for code quality, performance, and work ethic
  • Implement and defend disciplined engineering processes
  • Measure and improve team health, productivity, and delivery quality
  • Ensure timely delivery of projects, including community participation and documentation
  • Represent products to stakeholders, partners, and customers
  • Plan, manage, and track progress on goals and projects
  • Collaborate with other product leads and leadership team

Requirements

  • Passion and confidence to run a project which spans teams and time zones, hiring and managing engineering managers and staff engineers.
  • Ability to lead multiple teams of engineers, ranging from graduate to senior levels.
  • Experience developing your engineering managers and maintaining Canonical culture.
  • Experience hiring staff level engineers for specific roles like performance and quality.
  • Ability to coach, mentor, and offer career development feedback to team members.
  • Experience identifying and measuring indicators of team health and productivity.
  • Ability to ensure rounded delivery including community participation and documentation.
  • Implement disciplined engineering processes and defend them.
  • Set and measure progress against benchmark goals for speed and efficiency.
  • Represent your product to stakeholders, partners, and customers.
  • Develop and evangelise great engineering and organisational practices.
  • Plan and manage progress on agreed goals and projects.
  • Be an active part of the leadership team, collaborating with other leaders.
  • Collaborate with leads for related or dependent products.
  • Hold an exceptional academic track record from high school and university, or a compelling narrative about an alternative path.
  • Possess an undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or demonstrate relevant experience if alternative path is taken.
  • Have extensive management experience and confidence to set high expectations.
  • Have an outstanding Linux-based software engineering track record.
  • Demonstrate drive and a track record of going above-and-beyond expectations.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, including public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Have a love of developing and growing people with a proven track record of doing so.
  • Experience in leading, coaching, and mentoring software developers.
  • Be organised and able to ensure your team delivers timely, high-quality results.
  • Be well-organised, self-starting, and able to deliver to schedule.
  • Maintain a professional manner when interacting with colleagues, partners, and community.
  • Have advanced expertise in your own domain of software engineering.
  • Be knowledgeable and passionate about software development.
  • Have solid experience working in an agile development environment.
  • Demonstrate a drive for continual learning.
  • Build trust, relationships, and confidence within teams and stakeholders.
  • Be result-oriented, with a personal drive to meet commitments.
  • Be able to travel twice a year for company events, for up to two weeks each time.
