Job Description

A senior Site Reliability Engineer specializing in GitOps and automation, responsible for developing infrastructure as code, automating software operations across private and public clouds, and maintaining core services for Canonical's IT environment supporting millions of Ubuntu users.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support and maintain Canonical's IT production services, including core services, networks, and infrastructure.
  • Drive automation and GitOps development as an embedded technical lead within the team.
  • Design and architect services to be offered as products to the organization.
  • Develop and improve infrastructure as code practices, increasing automation and process efficiency.
  • Automate software operations for reusability and consistency across private and public clouds.
  • Troubleshoot, perform capacity planning, and investigate performance issues for systems and services.
  • Set up, maintain, and utilize observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and Elasticsearch for monitoring and alerting.
  • Collaborate with global engineering, operations, and support teams to deliver services.
  • Mentor team members, share best practices, and participate in design sessions.
  • Manage time-critical escalations and ensure operational reliability.

Requirements

  • Proven experience of IT operations automation, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and a passion for technology.
  • Experience in developing automation and GitOps practices within a team as an embedded technical lead.
  • Experience designing and architecting services that can be offered as products to an organization.
  • Extensive experience with Python software development, including large projects.
  • Experience working with Kubernetes or other container orchestration systems.
  • Proven exposure to managing and deploying cloud infrastructure with code.
  • Practical knowledge of Linux networking, routing, and firewalls.
  • Hands-on experience administering enterprise Linux servers.
  • Extensive knowledge of cloud computing concepts and technologies.
  • Bachelor’s degree or greater, preferably in computer science or a related engineering field.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English via email, chat, video, voice calls, and in person.
  • Motivated and able to troubleshoot issues from kernel level to web applications, with a willingness to ask for help when appropriate.
  • Willingness to be flexible and learn new skills quickly.
  • Ability to work effectively within distributed teams and in fast-changing environments.
  • Familiarity and passion for open-source projects, especially Ubuntu or Debian.
  • Ability to develop infrastructure as code practices within IS by increasing automation and improving IaC processes.
  • Ability to automate software operations for re-usability and consistency across private and public clouds, considering the complexities of distributed systems.
  • Ability to maintain operational responsibility for core services, networks, and infrastructure.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, perform capacity planning, and conduct performance investigations.
  • Experience setting up, maintaining, and using observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and Elasticsearch, and designing, implementing, and maintaining monitoring and alerting systems.
  • Ability to collaborate with globally distributed engineering, operations, and support teams.
  • Ability to carry final responsibility for time-critical escalations.
