Job Description
A Data Center Infrastructure Engineer at Canonical is responsible for managing and maintaining the company's lab environment used for Ubuntu server certification, including hardware deployment, configuration, automation, and collaboration with engineering teams to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and operate the automated server and network hardware lab in Toronto.
- Maintain accurate inventory and physical layout of hardware components.
- Receive, install, and configure new hardware and network switches.
- Use software tools to deploy, configure, and update server hardware and network equipment.
- Exercise MAAS functionality by integrating with testing and scheduling software.
- Troubleshoot hardware and software issues within the data center.
- Enhance and automate hardware and network monitoring through scripting and software development.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including hardware, kernel, and certification engineers.
Requirements
- A STEM Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Computer Science or Software Engineering
- Excellent organisational skills
- Attention to detail
- Data centre experience
- Linux Administration experience
- Python programming experience
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English
- Ability to work with a globally distributed team of passionate engineers
- Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events
- Experience in operating a fully automated server lab with the latest server and network silicon from leading vendors, remotely and on-site
- Experience in maintaining accurate inventory and layout of hardware in a data centre
- Experience in receiving, installing, and configuring new hardware
- Experience in actively exercising MAAS functionality by using integrations with testing and scheduling software such as Testflinger
- Experience in reporting issues and troubleshooting hardware and software problems
- Experience in using Python development skills to enhance software-driven operations of the data centre
- Experience in improving and extending hardware and network monitoring through automation
- Ability to collaborate with other MAAS engineers, data centre hardware specialists, teams responsible for certifying hardware for Ubuntu, kernel engineers, and other teams who use the hardware lab
- Exceptional academic track record from high school and preferably university
