Job Description
This position involves working on the Linux kernel across various platforms and architectures for Ubuntu, focusing on stability, security, performance, and hardware enablement. The role includes collaboration with global teams, diagnosing issues, developing patches, and contributing to upstream kernel projects in a remote, flexible environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with a globally distributed team to develop and improve Linux kernel features and performance
- Diagnose and resolve issues in the Ubuntu Linux kernel
- Submit, review, and apply kernel patches
- Work closely with silicon, cloud, or hardware manufacturers to enable hardware and virtualization features
- Improve tooling and automation for kernel delivery and testing
- Ensure production readiness, security, reliability, and performance of supported Ubuntu kernels
Requirements
- Significant programming experience in C and a solid background with git.
- Demonstrated experience with kernel patching and debugging.
- Understanding of Linux kernel upstream processes and release cycle.
- Strong grasp of device drivers, BSPs, and other low level system engineering.
- Experience diagnosing and resolving issues in the Linux kernel.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and oral.
- Professional manner interacting with colleagues, partners, and community.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability.
- Result-oriented, with a personal drive to meet commitments.
- Ability to travel twice a year, for company events up to two weeks each.
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative about an alternative path.
- Outstanding academic results from high school and university.
- Drive and a track record of going above-and-beyond expectations.
- Well-organized, self-starting, and able to deliver to fixed schedules.
- Ability to work in a distributed team environment.
- Experience with Linux Debian or Ubuntu preferred.
- Experience submitting, reviewing, and applying kernel patches.
- Understanding of Linux kernel subsystems and release cycle.
- Ability to diagnose and resolve issues in the kernel.
- Ability to improve tooling and automation for delivery and testing of Ubuntu Linux kernels.
