Job Description
This position involves working as a software engineer on the Linux kernel team at Canonical, focusing on developing, testing, and maintaining Ubuntu Linux kernels across various hardware platforms and use cases, with an emphasis on security, performance, and stability in a remote, globally distributed environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with a globally distributed team to develop and improve Linux kernel components
- Diagnose and resolve issues in the Linux kernel
- Improve tooling and automation for kernel delivery and testing
- Submit, review, and apply kernel patches
- Work closely with silicon, cloud, or hardware manufacturers to enable hardware and virtualization features
- Ensure production readiness, security, reliability, and performance of Ubuntu Linux kernels
- Contribute to projects such as kernel benchmarking, stress testing, and performance optimization
Requirements
- Significant programming experience in C and a solid background with git.
- Demonstrated experience with kernel patching and debugging.
- Understanding of Linux kernel upstream processes and release cycle.
- Strong grasp of device drivers, BSPs, and other low-level system engineering.
- Experience diagnosing and resolving issues in the Linux kernel.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and oral.
- Professional manner interacting with colleagues, partners, and community.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability.
- Result-oriented, with a personal drive to meet commitments.
- Ability to travel twice a year, for company events up to two weeks each.
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative about an alternative path.
- Outstanding academic results from both high school and university.
- Drive and a track record of going above-and-beyond expectations.
- Well-organized, self-starting, and able to deliver to fixed schedules.
- Ability to work in a distributed team environment.
- Willingness to work from home, worldwide, with no requirement to work from an office.
- Experience with Linux Debian or Ubuntu preferred.
