This role involves developing and maintaining the Linux kernel for Ubuntu across various platforms, collaborating with a global team, troubleshooting issues, and contributing to open-source kernel projects, primarily using C and Rust programming languages.
Key Responsibilities
Collaborate with a globally distributed team to develop and maintain the Linux kernel for Ubuntu
Learn from senior mentors to understand the inner workings of the Linux kernel
Work closely with external hardware and silicon manufacturers on platform support
Diagnose and resolve kernel issues reported by customers, community, or testing
Deliver various flavors of the Ubuntu Linux kernel
Improve tooling and automation for kernel delivery and testing
Submit, review, and apply kernel patches in collaboration with upstream maintainers
Requirements
Recent university graduates or early career professionals who are enthusiastic to develop kernel-level software in multiple areas including security updates, patching, and testing.
A background in software engineering.
Motivated to work in a distributed team.
Willing and able to travel globally twice a year for company engineering events.
Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal.
Programming experience in C and/or Rust.
Familiarity with version control practices, ideally with git.
Understanding of operating system kernel fundamentals.
Ability to work as a well-organized and motivated self-starter able to thrive in a remote work environment.
Ability to diagnose and resolve issues in the kernel reported by customers, the community, and discovered by rigorous testing.
Ability to submit, review, and apply kernel patches, working with both internal and external upstream maintainers.
