Job Description
An Engineering Manager at Canonical leads and mentors a distributed team working on the Launchpad platform, driving technical excellence and strategic development to support open-source projects like Ubuntu. The role involves fostering collaboration, implementing agile practices, and shaping the future of open-source infrastructure in a remote, globally distributed environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and grow a high-performing, distributed engineering team within the EMEA region.
- Mentor, coach, and develop engineers to achieve their full potential and foster a culture of continuous learning.
- Shape the technical direction of Launchpad, influencing strategic decisions and ensuring successful project execution.
- Apply engineering principles to solve complex challenges and contribute directly to technical goals.
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders across teams, management, and external partners to drive alignment and shared success.
- Lead the ongoing development and innovation of Launchpad infrastructure to support open-source projects like Ubuntu.
- Advocate for modern, agile software development practices and promote a collaborative, inclusive, and innovative work environment.
- Collaborate with the broader leadership team to define and execute engineering strategies.
Requirements
- Experience driving the success of a distributed team, ensuring seamless feature delivery and robust production services at scale.
- Proven ability to inspire, mentor, and develop engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth, with an outstanding track record of doing so.
- Deep technical expertise and passion to fuel innovation, enabling the team to solve complex challenges with confidence.
- Experience leading teams to build and ship high-quality software, pushing the boundaries of scalability and reliability.
- Experience designing and evolving distributed systems that power mission-critical applications and future-proof infrastructure.
- Capable of articulating ideas effectively, ensuring alignment across teams and stakeholders with clear, persuasive communication.
- Track record of driving agile methodologies, fostering adaptability, collaboration, and efficiency in a fast-moving environment.
- Location within the EMEA region, as this is a remote role based in that region.
- Ability to work from home with engagement in global teams, including up to 6 weeks per year of international travel for key events.
