Job Description

The Engineering Director at Canonical leads and manages software engineering teams focused on hardware enablement, quality assurance, and testing for Ubuntu across various CPU architectures, ensuring continuous certification and high-quality performance of hardware devices in a global, collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage software engineering teams focused on hardware enablement quality assurance and testing.
  • Oversee the OEM QA Engineering team, including planning, quality strategy development, and process improvement.
  • Enhance automated testing capabilities and execute manual and automated tests on Ubuntu hardware.
  • Coordinate with development teams to build efficient automated testing processes.
  • Establish and maintain engineering processes to improve hardware certification quality and reliability.
  • Manage testing schedules, resource planning, and bug triage activities.
  • Develop and mentor engineering managers and staff engineers, fostering team growth and culture.
  • Hire, evaluate, and develop engineering talent for performance and quality roles.
  • Set and measure team performance indicators, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality results.
  • Represent the team and product to stakeholders, partners, and customers.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and OEM partners to improve hardware certification and quality standards.

Requirements

  • The candidate must have an outstanding Linux based software engineering track record, preferably with low-level embedded experience.
  • The candidate must have an undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling narrative about their alternative chosen path.
  • The candidate must have confidence to respectfully speak up, exchange feedback, and share ideas without hesitation.
  • The candidate must have a track record of going above-and-beyond expectations to achieve outstanding results.
  • The candidate must have demonstrated leadership and a track record of developing and growing people.
  • The candidate must be organized and able to ensure their team delivers timely, high quality results.
  • The candidate must have management experience and the confidence to set high expectations.
  • The candidate must have a passion for technology evidenced by personal projects and initiatives.
  • The candidate must have a strong work ethic and the confidence to shine alongside motivated colleagues.
  • The candidate must have professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.
  • The candidate must have experience with Linux Debian or Ubuntu preferred.
  • The candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability.
  • The candidate must be appreciative of diversity, polite, and effective in a multi-cultural, multi-national organization.
  • The candidate must demonstrate professionalism when interacting with colleagues, partners, and the community.
  • The candidate must be thoughtful and self-motivated.
  • The candidate must be result-oriented, with a personal drive to meet commitments.
  • The candidate must have the ability to travel internationally twice a year, for company events up to two weeks long.
