A senior mechanical engineer specializing in API storage tanks, responsible for leading field and engineering evaluations, reviewing inspection data, performing fitness-for-service assessments, and supporting repair, replacement, and capital planning efforts to ensure tank safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Lead field evaluations and review inspection data of in-service API storage tanks.
Review inspection reports and define scopes of work for tank repairs, alterations, or reconstructions.
Perform remaining life calculations and assess tank integrity based on inspection and corrosion data.
Support capital projects by defining repair and replacement scopes, including early-phase planning and RFQ documentation.
Provide technical support during field execution, including outages, turnarounds, and safety compliance.
Requirements
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
Minimum of 10 years of experience with API storage tanks in refineries, terminals, or petrochemical environments
Knowledge of API 650, API 620, and API 653 standards
Experience leading field evaluations of in-service API 650, 653, and 620 storage tanks, including review of mechanical inspection data, settlement data, and corrosion assessments
Ability to technically review in-house and third-party tank inspection reports and define clear, written scopes of work for tank repair, alteration, or reconstruction
Ability to perform and review remaining life calculations based on inspection reports
Experience evaluating settlement and determining required mitigations
Ability to review and technically assess shell ultrasonic testing (UT) data to establish appropriate maintenance strategies
Experience reviewing and commenting on tank fabrication drawings, repair drawings, and mechanical design calculations from contractors
Ability to assess the integrity and remaining life of tanks based on corroded thicknesses
Supportive experience in defining scopes for repairs and full tank replacements, including early-phase capital planning and RFQ documents
Ability to interface directly with fixed equipment engineers, inspectors, maintenance teams, contractors, and industry subject-matter experts
Provide technical support during field execution, including outage and turnaround activities
Review and support API 2000 venting calculations for normal and emergency venting
Support tank fire protection evaluations
Working knowledge of welding procedures
Must meet all client-specific site requirements prior to deployment, including physical mobility on the ground and at heights, ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work at heights, climb ladders and scaffolding using fall protection, and work in all weather conditions while wearing appropriate PPE
Ability to position oneself to work in confined spaces
Willingness to adhere to client’s random drug testing program and facial hair safety policy prior to entering client sites
