Job Description
The Aurora CDL A Operator is responsible for operating autonomous and manual commercial vehicles to support self-driving technology development, including data collection, vehicle testing, mapping, and software validation, while ensuring safety and compliance across diverse environments and travel schedules.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate autonomous and manual Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMV) to execute development missions, including mapping, validation, and testing.
- Perform pre- and post-trip inspections, sensor calibration, software updates, and troubleshooting to ensure vehicle readiness.
- Collect, log, and annotate mission data accurately, providing detailed feedback on vehicle performance and environment interactions.
- Adhere to safety protocols, DOT FMCSA regulations, and legal requirements during vehicle operation.
- Act as the primary communication link between on-road operations and engineering teams, conveying development needs and feedback.
Requirements
- Possession of an Interstate Class-A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and a valid U.S. Driver's License, with the ability to pass DOT physical and meet all DOT qualification standards.
- Must pass pre-employment, post-incident, and randomized drug testing in accordance with FMCSA requirements.
- Driving record must pass Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) guidelines.
- Must be at least 25 years of age.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience driving trucks commercially.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude for basic troubleshooting and maintenance of vehicle systems.
- Proficiency in collaboration tools, including Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets.
- Experience with Jira, including filling out tickets and tracking ticket statuses.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for technical reporting and team collaboration.
- Inquisitive attitude, interested in problem solving and solving puzzles.
- Ability to prioritize and make strategic decisions proactively.
- Ability to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) and execute mission protocols in a wide range of weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
- Comfortable with long-distance driving in diverse traffic and weather conditions, including urban, rural, interstate highways, and construction zones.
- Ability to travel weekly to new collection locations up to 90% of the time, including extended periods over the road and air travel for deployments.
- Flexibility to work rotating shifts, including over-the-road schedules, weekends, or nights, and to work regular overtime.
- Ability to pass all DOT and company-required testing, including pre-employment drug and alcohol screening, ongoing random testing, and annual medical certification.
- Physical ability to sit for long periods while operating a vehicle and lift up to 50 pounds for equipment handling and cargo securing.
- Willingness to operate the Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) and execute mission protocols in a wide range of environmental conditions, including dust, dirt, vibration, and particulate matter.
- Schedule flexibility to work non-standard hours, including nights and weekends, to meet critical development deadlines.
