Job Description
The Software Engineering Manager will lead the Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Platform team at Aurora, overseeing the development and operationalization of simulation tools and infrastructure to ensure the safety and reliability of autonomous trucks, while managing cross-functional projects and mentoring engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Operationalize the HIL platform as a customer-centric product to enable autonomous vehicle engineers to ship code confidently and quickly
- Evaluate complex architectural proposals such as hardware build-vs-buy and cloud vs. local simulation to balance project needs and platform scalability
- Manage end-to-end delivery of large-scale infrastructure projects, including requirements gathering, deployment, and maintenance
- Mentor and develop engineering teams to foster technical excellence and support organizational growth
- Act as the primary interface between software teams and vehicle hardware teams to ensure platform accuracy and integration
Requirements
- 10 years of professional software or systems engineering experience successfully built and shipped complex technical products or platforms.
- 7 years of people management experience with a demonstrated ability to lead teams through high-pressure delivery cycles and organizational growth.
- Proven ability to analyze technical trade-offs such as performance versus maintainability and to align engineering roadmaps with overarching business objectives.
- Strong project management expertise in managing complex, multi-stakeholder projects with a focus on predictable delivery, risk mitigation, and resource allocation.
- High proficiency in at least one systems-level language (e.g., C or Rust), an automation scripting language (e.g., Python, Golang), or cloud infrastructure, with the ability to lead deep-dive technical reviews across different layers of the stack.
- Experience operationalizing a platform as a product by transforming internal hardware and simulation tools into a reliable, customer-centric service that enables Autonomy engineers to ship code with confidence and speed.
- Experience evaluating complex architectural proposals such as build-vs-buy decisions on hardware rigs or cloud versus local simulation, balancing immediate project needs with long-term platform scalability.
- Experience managing the end-to-end delivery of large-scale infrastructure projects, from initial requirements gathering with cross-functional stakeholders to laboratory deployment and maintenance.
- Ability to act as the primary interface between software teams and vehicle hardware teams, ensuring the platform accurately reflects the complexities of an autonomous truck.
