Job Description
The Distribution Designer at Atwell is responsible for designing and supporting electrical and gas distribution projects, including overhead and underground systems, ensuring compliance with standards, collaborating with utilities and clients, and addressing engineering challenges across residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Design overhead and underground electrical distribution systems for residential and small commercial projects.
- Perform load calculations, voltage drop analysis, and system capacity evaluations.
- Review and interpret engineering drawings, maps, and utility standards.
- Coordinate with field crews, engineers, permitting agencies, and clients on project execution.
- Support new service connections, upgrades, relocations, and system improvements.
- Ensure compliance with NESC, local codes, and utility standards.
- Utilize GIS, CAD, and utility design software for project development and verification.
- Address engineering challenges across diverse projects including gas infrastructure and substation design.
- Verify as-built conditions in GIS and correct discrepancies with field data.
Requirements
- Proficiency in one of the following software applications: MicroStation, AutoCAD, and GIS is required.
- Experience working on distribution, transmission, system improvement projects, substation design, service design, and switch replacements.
- 1-2 years of relevant experience in electrical distribution design or related field is preferred.
- Knowledge of NESC (National Electrical Safety Code), ArcFm GIS, SAP, and Work Manager Software for overhead and underground systems.
- Ability to perform load calculations, voltage drop analysis, and system capacity evaluations.
- Ability to review and interpret engineering drawings, maps, and utility standards.
- Ability to coordinate with field crews, engineers, permitting agencies, and clients.
- Experience supporting new service connections, upgrades, relocations, and system improvements.
- Experience verifying as-built conditions in GIS AUD to identify and correct discrepancies with field data.
- Familiarity with engineering design software applications such as PLS CADD, PLS POLE, SPIDACalc, Quick Pole, CDEGS, CYMECAP, CYMEDIST, CYMETCC, SAG10 as specified by the purchaser.
- Knowledge of safety and compliance standards including NESC and local codes.
- Ability to collaborate on projects including system improvement, new and existing gas infrastructure, pole locations, substation design, and service design.
- Strong technical expertise with a focus on precision in engineering design and project execution.
