Job Description
The BESS Field Technician is responsible for maintaining and operating utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems, including troubleshooting, testing, repairs, and supervising contractors to ensure safe and efficient plant performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor BESS plant operation through SCADA systems
- Perform commissioning, testing, inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and modification of AC and DC BESS systems
- Supervise contractors to ensure safe, high-quality, and timely maintenance activities
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols, procedures, and regulations
- Perform corrective, preventive, and emergency maintenance on solar PV and BESS systems
- Conduct onsite installation, repairs, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis of electrical faults
- Prepare technical reports on system failures and maintenance activities
- Manage and track materials, work orders, and vendor services using CMMS
- Perform testing and troubleshooting of electrical equipment including transformers, inverters, relays, and batteries
- Create and follow operating, switching, maintenance, safety, and environmental procedures
Requirements
- 3 years of direct experience as a BESS technician or PV solar technician or 6 years experience in a non-solar electrical maintenance role
- Excellent writing and verbal skills
- Valid U.S. Driver license with acceptable MVR history
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment including steel composite toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective jacket or apron, and arm guards
- Ability to sit, stand, or walk short distances for up to the entire duration of a shift
- Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis
- Must be able to comply with all safety standards and procedures
- Willingness to work flexible hours and be on-call for emergencies
- Proficiency in performing testing, switching, and troubleshooting of low, medium, and high voltage equipment, including transformers, breakers, relays, contactors, motors, batteries, and inverters
- Proficiency in understanding electrical schematics and electrical principles
- Proficiency in performing corrective, preventive, and emergency maintenance for solar PV systems
- Proficiency in using testing equipment such as Power Quality Meters, Insulation Resistance Testers, Multimeters, and other equipment as needed
- Proficiency in creating and following operating, switching, maintenance, safety, and environmental procedures
- Proficiency in ensuring CMMS work orders are complete in their entirety
- Proficiency in preparing documents necessary for procurement and utilization of materials and vendor services
- Proficiency in maintaining work area and site housecleaning to company standards
- Proficiency in computer skills in a Windows environment, including Microsoft Office products
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects
- Self-directed and accountable, with critical thinking skills
- Ability to communicate effectively across all necessary parts of the organization
- Willingness to support job responsibilities outside of scheduled work hours, including night, overtime, weekend, and holiday work
- Travel may be required
- Preferred: CEC license or technical degree
- Preferred: Electrical certifications such as state or journeyman licenses
- Preferred: Experience operating and maintaining power plant electrical systems, SCADA and controls systems operation, troubleshooting advanced electrical components, and performing equipment preventative and corrective maintenance
- Preferred: Familiarity with CMMS systems for maintenance tracking
- Preferred: Strong understanding of renewable energy technology
