Lead design detailing for containerized power electronic systems based on system architecture and requirements developed by the team and in collaboration with other engineers — translating block-level and layout-level intent into complete component and assembly designs.
Own mechanical system integration — ensure subsystems (power electronics, enclosures, thermal, electrical interconnect, structure) come together as a coherent whole, managing interfaces, packaging, clearances, serviceability, and fit across the full system assembly.
Maintain a systems view — track how component-level design choices propagate to system-level cost, weight, thermal, manufacturability, and field-integration outcomes, and flag conflicts between subsystem requirements early.
Research component and subsystem options (enclosures, thermal management, busbars and electrical interconnect, cabling, structural supports, environmental sealing) and develop fact-based trade comparisons to inform design decisions.
Interface with prospective suppliers to capture key mechanical, electrical, and thermal interfaces; surface requirements and constraints early; and feed supplier capabilities back into the design.
Design for manufacturability — drive part and assembly designs toward repeatable, high-volume fabrication and assembly; minimize part count, special processes, and hand-fit operations; define tolerances that hold at production scale; and work assembly sequence and tooling/fixturing needs into the design from the start.
Define and implement the field-replaceable unit (FRU) strategy — partition the system into serviceable modules with clean mechanical, electrical, and thermal break points; design connectorization, mounting, captive hardware, access clearances, and lift/handling provisions so FRUs can be swapped safely in the field with standard tooling and minimal downtime; and document the swap procedure, torque/sequence requirements, and any required lockout/de-energization steps.
Prepare and maintain design documentation — detailed CAD, drawings, interface control documents, BOMs, assembly and service procedures, and the requirement traceability behind design choices.
Support design reviews, prototyping, and system-level integration and serviceability testing as the design matures.
Requirements
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
Proficiency in a parametric CAD tool (SolidWorks, Siemens NX, Fusion 360, or similar) and comfort producing detailed, manufacturable drawings.
Working understanding of design for manufacturing (DFM) across sheet metal, weldments, and machined/fabricated structures, including tolerance and assembly-sequence considerations.
Demonstrated ability to research and compare component options against defined requirements, and to reason through integration into a larger assembly.
Clear written and verbal communication, including direct interaction with suppliers and cross-functional teams.
Experience designing for field serviceability and FRU/modular replacement — connectorization, access, handling, and documented service procedures for deployed equipment.
Experience integrating multi-subsystem hardware as a coherent unit — managing interfaces across mechanical, electrical, and thermal domains.
Design-for-assembly (DFA) experience and exposure to production ramp or volume manufacturing.
Exposure to power electronics, battery, or electrical-system packaging (enclosures, busbars, electrical integration, dielectric/clearance/creepage considerations).
Experience with PLM systems (Teamcenter, SolidWorks PDM, Propel, or similar).
Familiarity with relevant standards and certification processes (e.g., UL, IEC) for power or energy-storage equipment.
Experience working with international/overseas suppliers.
Comfort in a fast-paced startup environment with shifting priorities.
