Job Description

The Water Wastewater Treatment Operations Chief oversees the daily operations, maintenance, and management of multiple water and wastewater treatment facilities, ensuring regulatory compliance, staff coordination, reporting, and system optimization to produce high-quality water for the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage daily operations and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment facilities in compliance with regulations
  • Schedule and direct staff in plant operation and maintenance activities
  • Develop and oversee budgets, including capital projects and payroll
  • Ensure accurate regulatory reporting by preparing and submitting required reports
  • Maintain records and utilize work management systems for operational documentation
  • Train and mentor operators to enhance their performance
  • Coordinate with staff, clients, contractors, and engineering firms to optimize system operation
  • Obtain samples for analysis and ensure proper facility maintenance
  • Perform hands-on operational tasks and produce necessary reports
  • Maintain effective communication with clients and the community

Requirements

  • Possession of a minimum Florida Class A wastewater certification and a minimum Florida Class A water certification.
  • Experience in managing the daily operations and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment facilities, including scheduling staff, providing operational direction, and ensuring compliance with all Federal, State, and local regulations.
  • Ability to complete, submit, and ensure the accuracy of Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs) and Monthly Operation Reports (MORs) to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) as per regulations.
  • Proficiency in utilizing the Hach Wims system to create plant-specific DMRs, MORs, and other required regulatory reports for submission.
  • Experience in developing and managing the capital budget and executing capital projects related to water and wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Experience overseeing payroll, employee evaluations, and ensuring proper facility coverage.
  • Ability to obtain samples for analysis and maintain accurate records of operational data.
  • Strong communication skills to maintain an open relationship with customers and the community.
  • Experience training and mentoring operators to perform at their full potential.
  • Physical ability and willingness to perform hands-on work at treatment facilities.
  • Ability to coordinate and communicate effectively with staff, client representatives, contractors, and engineering firms to ensure system operation and optimization.
  • Knowledge of and compliance with all relevant Federal, State, and local water and wastewater regulations.
  • Ability to perform administrative duties including budgeting, purchasing, report writing, and record keeping.
  • Availability to work outdoors and in various environmental conditions as part of the operational duties.
