Job Description
The Staff Battery Cell Engineer will design, evaluate, and optimize next-generation battery cells using innovative materials, conducting comprehensive performance testing, failure analysis, and data modeling to improve battery performance and reliability for consumer applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and execute test plans for multilayer battery cells, including component validation and full cell qualification
- Analyze test data using advanced statistical and modeling techniques to interpret performance and guide design improvements
- Conduct failure analysis on prototype and qualification cells to identify root causes
- Support development of cell prototypes and refine prototyping processes
- Develop and integrate novel testing methodologies at material, electrode, and cell levels to enhance performance evaluation
Requirements
- At least a B.S. in engineering or science and 8 years of industry experience, or fewer years for candidates with an advanced degree.
- Demonstrated hands-on expertise in the comprehensive performance evaluation of battery components including electrolytes, anodes, cathodes, foils, and separators.
- Proven ability to integrate novel components and innovations to optimize voltage, energy density, cycle life, and gassing tradeoffs.
- Experience supporting prototype builds and conducting thorough failure analysis on prototype cells and customer qualification units.
- Proficiency in leveraging advanced data analysis, statistical methods, and modeling techniques to interpret test results, predict performance, and inform design iterations.
- Solid understanding of battery performance and failure mechanisms, including electrolyte degradation, material and cell-level swell, and lithium plating.
- Experience with characterization and integration of novel battery components.
- Experience with cell prototyping.
- Ability to carefully plan and implement multiple projects simultaneously.
- Physical ability to operate a computer and other office equipment such as a laptop, copier, and printer in a fixed location.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment including lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and steel toe safety shoes.
- Physical ability to move long distances such as from building to building and remain stationary for extended periods.
- Ability to pass a respirator fit test and wear respiratory protection on an occasional basis.
Benefits & Perks
Compensation/salary range: $151,000 to $191,000
Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 6:00pm
