Redwood Materials is seeking a Staff High Voltage Electrical Engineer to lead the design, analysis, and integration of high voltage electrical infrastructure for renewable energy and energy storage projects, supporting the company's mission to build a sustainable circular economy for lithium-ion batteries.
Key Responsibilities
Design high voltage AC electrical systems for industrial substations (69kV to 345kV) and integrate with transmission lines and distribution networks
Develop and review substation layouts, protection and control systems, relay settings, grounding plans, and perform grid stability and simulation studies
Interface with utilities and regulatory bodies for interconnection, permitting, and compliance of renewable energy and BESS projects
Evaluate and select high voltage equipment such as switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, and protection relays
Lead high voltage electrical design from concept through commissioning, including technical reviews and troubleshooting
Coordinate with civil and structural teams on substation layout and site development
Support construction, testing, and commissioning activities with field engineering expertise
Manage technical documentation, vendor submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings for accuracy
Conduct feasibility analysis for medium voltage DC distribution systems for BESS integration
Mentor junior engineers and develop workflows, standards, and templates for high voltage design and simulation
Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Nevada or eligible for reciprocity, with the requirement to obtain PE licensure in Nevada and South Carolina within 2 months of start date
Minimum of 10 years of experience in high voltage electrical design, preferably in EPC environments
Advanced proficiency in transmission-level load flow and stability analysis using PSSE and PSLF
Experience with electromagnetic transient simulations using PSCAD, EMTC, or similar software
Experience with relay settings using SEL AcSELerator or equivalent software
Experience with relay coordination and fault studies using ASPEN OneLiner or similar software
Experience with power system modeling using ETAP, SKM, or similar tools
Proficiency in AutoCAD, Navisworks, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office
Ability to develop single-line diagrams, physical layouts, protection and control systems, relay design and coordination, and grounding plans for substations
Experience in reviewing and evaluating the design of existing substations to provide recommendations for improving reliability and stability
Experience in performing grid simulation and stability studies, including short circuit, load flow, and arc flash studies
Experience in evaluating and selecting high voltage equipment including switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, reactors, PTs, CTs, and protection relays
Ability to serve as Electrical Engineer of Record for assigned projects
Knowledge of and ability to lead code compliance reviews for NEC, IEEE, NESC, and NFPA standards
Experience interfacing with utilities and ISO RTOs to support interconnection studies, permitting, and compliance for renewable and BESS projects
Experience supporting facilities, construction, and commissioning teams with field engineering, testing, and troubleshooting
Experience reviewing vendor submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings for technical accuracy
Ability to participate in technical bid evaluations and identify scope gaps
Experience leading R&D efforts for feasibility analysis of medium voltage DC distribution systems for BESS integration
Ability to independently manage high voltage design packages from concept through commissioning
Experience coordinating with internal stakeholders and external consultants to align scope, schedule, and budget
Ability to prepare engineering cost estimates and execution schedules in collaboration with project controls
Experience leading technical reviews and design optimization workshops
Ability to mentor junior engineers and contribute to team development
Experience developing workflows, templates, and standards for high voltage design and simulation
Strong understanding of protection and control systems, SCADA, and substation automation
Field experience in construction and commissioning of high voltage systems (highly preferred)
