Redwood Materials is seeking a Staff High Voltage Electrical Engineer to lead the design, analysis, and integration of high voltage electrical infrastructure for renewable energy and energy storage projects, supporting the company's mission to create a sustainable circular economy for lithium-ion batteries.
Key Responsibilities
Design high voltage AC electrical systems for industrial substations (69kV to 345kV) and their integration with transmission lines and distribution networks
Review and evaluate existing substation designs to improve reliability and stability
Develop single-line diagrams, physical layouts, protection and control systems, relay settings, and grounding plans
Perform grid simulations and stability studies using industry-standard software
Interface with utilities and ISO RTOs for interconnection studies, permitting, and compliance
Conduct short circuit, load flow, and arc flash studies
Evaluate and select high voltage equipment such as switchgear, transformers, and protection relays
Lead high voltage design packages from concept through commissioning
Coordinate with civil and structural engineers on substation layout and site development
Support construction, testing, and troubleshooting during facilities commissioning
Review vendor submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings for technical accuracy
Participate in technical bid evaluations and scope gap analysis
Lead research and development efforts on medium voltage DC distribution systems for BESS integration
Ensure compliance with electrical codes and standards (NEC, IEEE, NESC, NFPA)
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team development
Develop workflows, templates, and standards for high voltage design and simulation
Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program
Licensed Professional Engineer in Nevada or eligible for reciprocity, with the requirement to obtain PE licensure in Nevada and South Carolina within 2 months of start date
Minimum of 10 years of experience in high voltage electrical design, preferably in EPC environments
Advanced proficiency in transmission-level load flow and stability analysis using PSSE and PSLF
Experience with electromagnetic transient simulations using PSCAD, EMTC, or similar software
Experience with relay settings development using SEL AcSELerator or equivalent software
Experience with relay coordination and fault studies using ASPEN OneLiner or similar software
Experience with power system modeling using ETAP, SKM, or similar tools
Proficiency in AutoCAD, Navisworks, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office
Ability to independently manage high voltage design packages from concept through commissioning
Experience in reviewing and evaluating the design of existing substations to provide recommendations for improving reliability and stability
Experience in developing single-line diagrams, physical layouts, protection and control systems, relay design and coordination, and grounding plans for substations
Experience performing grid simulation and stability studies
Experience interfacing with utilities and ISO RTOs to support interconnection studies, permitting, and compliance for renewable and BESS projects
Experience evaluating and selecting high voltage equipment including switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, reactors, PTs, CTs, and protection relays
Experience supporting facilities, construction, and commissioning teams with field engineering, testing, and troubleshooting
Experience reviewing vendor submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings for technical accuracy
Experience participating in technical bid evaluations and identifying scope gaps
Experience leading R&D efforts for feasibility analysis of medium voltage DC distribution systems for BESS integration
Strong understanding of protection and control systems, SCADA, and substation automation
Ability to lead code compliance reviews according to NEC, IEEE, NESC, NFPA standards
Ability to collaborate with civil and structural engineers on substation layout, foundations, and site development
Ability to develop workflows, templates, and standards for high voltage design and simulation
Strong communication skills to effectively communicate through verbal, written, and visual formats
Field experience in construction and commissioning of high voltage systems is highly preferred
