Job Description

A Staff Chemical Engineer specializing in Battery Recycling R&D at Redwood Materials, responsible for leading research and development in hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, and electrochemistry to develop and optimize recycling processes and equipment for sustainable battery material recovery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and participate in research and development of hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, electrochemistry, and minerals processing processes.
  • Identify and drive R&D initiatives to meet short-term business needs and future industry trends.
  • Develop and optimize commercial-scale equipment and processes based on R&D findings.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement new process concepts, plants, and equipment.
  • Design and develop flowsheets for metallurgical and chemical processes.
  • Support laboratory, pilot, and commercial-scale plant implementation, installation, and commissioning.

Requirements

  • A Master of Science (M.S.) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
  • At least 2 years of experience in hydrometallurgical, pyrometallurgical, or electrochemical processes.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience assembling test apparatuses and executing metallurgical or chemical experiments.
  • A proven track record of solving difficult chemical and metallurgical processing problems.
  • Experience in scoping and generating experimental test plans for developing metallurgical or chemical processes.
  • Background in Design of Experiments and using statistical methods for interpretation of test data.
  • Experience with process modeling tools such as HSCSIM, SysCAD, or METSIM, linking test work and pilot plant operation to real project implementation.
  • Understanding of material characterization methods such as XRD, XRF, ICP-OES MS, SEM, PSA, TGA, GC, etc.
  • Experience with high temperature processes and thermal processing equipment such as kilns, smelters, and off gas treatment systems is an asset.
  • Ability to safely perform job duties in both office and production environments.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. as needed.
  • Must maintain regular and punctual attendance in alignment with company and regulatory standards.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly.
  • Work in a split environment between office and production facility, including extended periods in the production environment.
  • Ability to work in challenging working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE, for extended periods.
  • Availability to work occasionally on weekends or alternate shifts to support production needs.
