The Storage Benchmarking Engineer is responsible for designing, executing, and analyzing storage performance benchmarks, troubleshooting performance issues across the compute, network, and storage stack, and collaborating with various teams to optimize storage products and influence industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
Design, execute, and analyze storage performance benchmarks using industry-standard tools
Configure HPC lab environment and automate setup for various benchmarks
Perform end-to-end performance troubleshooting across compute, network, and storage components
Develop and maintain automated benchmarking workflows using scripting and automation tools
Analyze benchmark results, generate reports, and provide insights for product optimization
Collaborate with engineering, product management, marketing, and sales teams to align benchmarking efforts
Engage with benchmark standards organizations and communities to influence methodologies and stay current with industry trends
Deliver technical presentations and write whitepapers, marketing documents, and performance summaries
Maintain documentation of benchmarking processes, configurations, and results
Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field or equivalent experience.
At least 5 years of experience in storage performance benchmarking or a related technical role.
Proven expertise with storage benchmarking tools, including fio (Flexible I/O tester) for workload simulation and vdbench (Versatile storage benchmarking tool for enterprise workloads).
Experience designing, executing, and analyzing storage performance benchmarks using industry-standard benchmarks such as fio, vdbench, SPEC SFS 2020, IO500, MLPerf, SPC-1, SPC-2, or similar benchmarks.
Strong end-to-end performance tuning and troubleshooting skills across compute, network, and storage layers.
Hands-on experience with automation tools such as Python, Ansible, or Bash for test orchestration and data collection.
Demonstrated ability to interface with engineering, product management, marketing, and sales teams.
Experience engaging directly with benchmark standards organizations such as SPEC, SNIA, MLCommons, and storage benchmarking communities.
Exceptional communication skills with the ability to deliver engaging technical briefs and presentations to technical and non-technical audiences.
Strong writing skills, with experience authoring technical marketing documents, whitepapers, or performance summaries.
Proficiency in data analysis and visualization tools such as Python, R, sheets, Excel, or Tableau.
Deep understanding and hands-on proficiency with enterprise storage technologies including NVMe, SSDs, and scale-up and scale-out block, file, and object storage, as well as distributed systems.
Experience with enterprise storage platforms such as Pure Storage FlashArray, FlashBlade, or similar products.
Familiarity with cloud storage solutions such as AWS S3, Azure Blob, or Google Cloud Storage.
Knowledge of containerized benchmarking workflows using Docker or Kubernetes.
Prior contributions to benchmark standards or open-source performance tools.
