Job Description
The Mechanical Engineer will lead the design, analysis, and manufacturing of spacecraft subsystems for Planet's fleet of Earth-imaging satellites, collaborating across teams to ensure successful hardware development and on-orbit performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop spacecraft subsystems from conceptual design through manufacturing and testing
- Create and present documentation and designs for spacecraft components during various design phases
- Collaborate with structural analysis team to ensure subsystems meet stiffness and strength requirements
- Perform tolerancing and release drawings for part fabrication
- Drive part assembly design and coordinate with vendors for manufacturing
- Support interface control document development and develop subsystem interfaces
- Assist in test planning, qualification campaigns, and hardware validation
- Troubleshoot and root cause on-orbit anomalies and production issues
Requirements
- 6 years experience owning products from requirements, through conceptual design, and into test and manufacturing
- 4 years of experience specifically in electronics packaging at the PCB A and chassis level design for high density digital, analog, RF, optical, and or power electronics
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or other related engineering or science degree
- Advanced in computer-aided design CAD software and Product Lifecycle Management software
- Solid experience using GD T and ANSI Y14.5 to generate good quality, low cost parts
- Experience with design and fabrication of composites and metal components
- Hands-on experience with dynamic hardware builds, test plan creation, and hardware validation
- Ability to be self-motivated and responsible while working in a dynamic environment
- Excellent verbal and visual communication skills
- Experience in thermal hardware design, mechanisms, and or structures (preferred but not mandatory)
- Experience designing products for low or mid volume serial production and understanding of manufacturing tradeoffs (preferred but not mandatory)
- Ability to drive manufacturers and DFM DFA
- Machine shop experience fabricating or modifying parts, including CNC Mill, Router, Mill, Lathe, Laser Cutter, 3D printer (preferred but not mandatory)
- Proficiency in Python, Matlab, and or Visual Basic VBA Application (preferred but not mandatory)
- This position requires access to export-controlled information, and the candidate must be able to access all applicable export-controlled information without additional export licensing being required by the Bureau of Industry and Security and or the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls

Salary range of $144,500 - $180,600 USD (dependent on experience, skills, and location)
