Job Description

The Utility Electrical Engineer I at New Leaf Energy is responsible for evaluating interconnection impacts, reviewing utility and project designs, and collaborating with utility partners to ensure the safe and reliable integration of renewable energy projects into the power grid.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate utility impact studies for accuracy, design changes, and cost estimates
  • Assist in evaluating potential PV sites and provide interconnection cost estimates
  • Review interconnection drawings and application packages for compliance
  • Manage technical aspects of the interconnection process for projects
  • Attend field design meetings with utility companies
  • Perform power systems modeling including coordination and grounding studies
  • Evaluate utility impact studies and recommend design modifications
  • Collaborate with internal teams to guide projects through acceptance testing

Requirements

  • At least 1-3 years of relevant experience in power systems or related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
  • Understanding of distribution system impacts associated with the interconnection of distributed energy resources (DER), as well as techniques for mitigating common distribution system impacts.
  • Ability to use design standards to complete engineering deliverables and perform analysis.
  • Experience in evaluating utility impact studies for accuracy, required design changes, and cost estimates.
  • Ability to review interconnection drawings and application packages for compliance with relevant utility standards and regulatory obligations.
  • Experience with power systems modeling software such as SKM, Aspen, or PSSe (preferred).
  • Ability to perform load calculations, short-circuit, and coordination studies.
  • Understanding of how distributed generation interacts with existing distribution and sub-transmission systems.
  • Ability to evaluate potential PV sites and provide estimates of interconnection costs.
  • Ability to evaluate utility impact studies for accuracy, required design changes, and cost estimates.
  • Ability to manage technical aspects of the interconnection process for projects.
  • Ability to attend field design meetings with relevant utility companies.
  • Ability to review interconnection drawings and application packages for compliance with utility standards and regulatory obligations.
