Job Description
The Director of Portfolio Management at HASI oversees and optimizes investments in utility-scale renewable energy projects, leading a team to monitor performance, manage risks, and ensure financial and operational success across the portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and optimize the financial performance of renewable energy portfolios.
- Lead value optimization initiatives, risk management, and performance monitoring through KPIs.
- Forecast, track, and report portfolio cash flows and performance metrics to management and investors.
- Maintain deep understanding of project assets, investment structures, and contractual obligations.
- Lead investment restructurings, workouts, modifications, and dispositions, including negotiations and review of deal documents.
- Support due diligence for new investments by reviewing contracts, market, and regulatory risks.
- Develop and support financial models for valuation, restructuring, and reporting purposes.
- Monitor and analyze portfolio operational and financial performance, conducting variance analysis.
- Establish early indicators of portfolio performance, value, and risks through metrics and dashboards.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams for onboarding, ongoing monitoring, and operational efficiency improvements.
- Support compliance monitoring, environmental attribute tracking, and portfolio optimization strategies.
- Participate in JV management and operating committees, and prepare internal and board reports.
Requirements
- At least 10 years of overall professional experience, with at least 10 years experience in investing, financing, and or portfolio management in the North American renewable energy sector, with a focus on wind, solar, renewable natural gas, electric transportation, energy efficiency, and or other sustainable infrastructure.
- Bachelor’s degree in business or technical discipline i.e. engineering or finance business.
- Demonstrated team leadership and management skills.
- Deep understanding of the underlying project assets and investment structures including financial, technical, and contractual aspects.
- Deep familiarity with deal documents, governance rights, HASI’s rights and obligations, and financial models of the portfolios they are leading.
- Experience acting as the lead on investment restructurings, workouts, modifications, and dispositions, including leading cross-functional teams, assessing value and risk, negotiating terms, and reviewing final deal documents.
- Ability to provide and manage financial modeling and other support for valuation updates, restructuring activities, and corporate reporting requirements including cash flow forecasting.
- Experience acting as primary liaison with external stakeholders such as asset management teams, sponsors, owner operators, lenders, and co-equity investors.
- Support due diligence on new investments by reviewing key commercial contract terms, working with the Investment Team to negotiate outcomes, and analyzing market and regulatory value drivers and risks.
- Provide feedback to the Investment Team to strengthen future underwriting based on existing portfolio experience.
- Manage the maintenance of investment data in software systems on an ongoing basis.
- Monitor and analyze operating and financial performance across the portfolio, including conducting variance analysis of project and investment performance.
- Establish and measure key metrics (KPIs) as early indicators of portfolio performance, value, and risks.
- Develop reports and dashboards to depict portfolio performance KPIs, financial metrics, and expected cash flows.
- Support compliance monitoring including tracking sponsor and investor communications, project contract compliance, insurance, and regulatory requirements.
- Enhance commodity and environmental attribute tracking, including pricing, basis, congestion, and curtailment trends, and support strategies for portfolio optimization.
- Understand and communicate deal and transaction specifics, and field ad-hoc requests related to investment data, performance, and processes.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to facilitate onboarding of new transactions and ongoing monitoring of investments.
- Support the ongoing build-out of software systems, reports, and analytics with the IT department to improve operational efficiency.
- Participate in JV Management and Operating Committees focusing on operational and commercial issues of existing investments.
- Assist in the preparation and presentation of periodic internal, leadership, and Board materials.
- Previous leadership and or direct investment financing experience in energy renewable assets and related financial investments such as tax equity partnerships, project finance debt and equity from either an owner operator or financial investor perspective.
- Experience leading a team and working in a cross-functional team environment, managing multiple priorities, and adjusting quickly to changing priorities.
- Strong financial analysis and modeling skills with experience in creating, reviewing, and analyzing financial models.
- Experience working with modern data analytics and reporting tools such as Business Objects, Tableau, and others.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
