Job Description
The Senior or Staff Mechanical Engineer will lead the design, analysis, and integration of mechanical structures and components for autonomous vehicles, supporting prototype development and production readiness while collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure high-quality vehicle builds.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical design analysis from ideation to drawing release.
- Own and perform analysis of subsystems or complex component assemblies on and off vehicles.
- Conduct finite element analyses to validate designs against use cases.
- Collaborate on design for manufacturing, assembly, and serviceability during the design cycle.
- Create and manage BOMs, work with procurement and manufacturing for downstream processes.
- Build and bring-up prototype vehicles following engineering standards.
- Design mechanical structures and integration solutions for sensors and electronic components.
- Perform detailed calculations and tolerance stack-up analyses for mechanical parts.
- Develop cooling solutions for sensors and electronic components.
- Mentor and establish standards and processes within the mechanical engineering discipline.
Requirements
- A minimum of 5 years of experience designing and analyzing complex mechanical structures and integration of hardware.
- An engineering degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, or an equivalent field.
- Experience delivering multiple parts, subsystems, or systems to production successfully.
- Experience in the automotive or transportation sector, dealing with larger assemblies and parts.
- Excellent skills in 3D CAD design and 2D drafting per ASME Y14.5, with SolidWorks preferred.
- Ability to perform finite element (FE) analyses, including vibration analysis (experience in FE analysis required).
- Experience working in an engineering process environment, including using PDM/PLM systems, creating ECOs, generating BOMs, and configuration management.
- Expertise in creating aluminum and steel designs, focusing on sheet metal fabrication, welded design, extrusions, and machined components.
- Expertise in tolerance stacking, especially linear simple 2D stacks, and use of appropriate GD&T strategies.
- Working knowledge of ISO 26262 and its relevance to the integration of electrical and electronic components.
- Experience in component selection and specification, including seals, fasteners, materials, and coatings.
- Hands-on engineering skills with the ability and willingness to use hand tools such as drills, brake presses, oscillating saws, grinders, and rotary tools.
- Ability to perform detailed calculations for components such as bolted, welded, or bonded joints, and seals.
- Ability to perform tolerance stack-up analysis for designs.
- Experience working on cooling solutions for sensors and electronic components.
- Ownership of BOMs and collaboration with procurement and manufacturing for downstream processes.
