Job Description

The position involves leading and providing technical expertise in research projects related to environmental science, including atmospheric sciences, chemical and biological analysis, and air quality modeling, primarily for the U.S. EPA. It requires designing solutions, managing laboratories, mentoring team members, and developing reports in a fast-paced research environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and provide technical expertise in the development, design, and execution of research projects related to environmental science and engineering.
  • Manage and operate specialized laboratories and machine shops, including fabrication, metrology, analytical, and microbiological labs.
  • Design, develop, and optimize solutions for research activities, including measurement methods, source emission characterization, and data collection.
  • Conduct research in atmospheric sciences, physical, chemical, biological, toxicological, and exposure development areas.
  • Apply and evaluate air quality simulation modeling within specialized facilities such as wind tunnels.
  • Write work plans, quality assurance documents, health and safety plans, and technical reports for research projects.
  • Lead technical projects and mentor junior team members to ensure project success and skill development.

Requirements

  • The candidate must have a strong technical background in engineering, science, or related fields relevant to research and development activities for environmental protection.
  • The candidate must have experience in designing, developing, and optimizing solutions related to atmospheric sciences, physical, chemical, biological, toxicological, and human and ecological exposure development, evaluation, and application of air quality simulation modeling.
  • The candidate must have the ability to lead and provide technical expertise in the development, design, and execution of technical research projects for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency s EPA s Office of Research and Development.
  • The candidate must have experience working in and managing specialized laboratories and machine shops, including fabrication machine shops, Metrology laboratories, and other analytical and microbiological laboratories.
  • The candidate must have experience in leading technical projects and mentoring junior team members.
  • The candidate must have excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate across teams to drive innovation.
  • The candidate must have the ability to write work plans, quality assurance project plans, health and safety plans, and reports for work being performed.
  • The candidate must be highly motivated with the skills to prioritize, perform, and communicate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • The candidate must have a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in research, engineering, or scientific roles related to environmental or atmospheric sciences.
  • The candidate must have a relevant educational background, such as a Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, science, or a related field.
  • The candidate must be able to perform physical demands associated with laboratory and field research activities, including working in specialized laboratories and machine shops.
  • The candidate must be willing to work in environments that may require adherence to health and safety protocols.
