Job Description
The position involves leading and providing technical expertise in research projects related to environmental science, including atmospheric sciences, emission characterization, and air quality modeling, while managing laboratory activities and mentoring junior staff for the U.S. EPA's Office of Research and Development.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and provide technical expertise in the development, design, and execution of research projects related to environmental science and engineering.
- Manage and operate specialized laboratories and machine shops, including fabrication, metrology, analytical, and microbiological labs.
- Design, develop, and optimize solutions for research activities, including measurement methods, source emission characterization, and data collection.
- Lead technical projects and mentor junior team members to ensure project success and knowledge transfer.
- Develop and write work plans, quality assurance plans, health and safety plans, and technical reports for research activities.
Requirements
- The candidate must have a strong technical background with experience in designing, developing, and optimizing solutions related to environmental research and engineering projects.
- The candidate must have experience leading technical projects and mentoring junior team members in a research or engineering environment.
- The candidate must have the ability to write work plans, quality assurance project plans, health and safety plans, and reports for work performed by ERG.
- The candidate must have a highly motivated attitude with the skills to prioritize, perform, and communicate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- The candidate must have a background in research activities including decontamination and consequence management research, development and validation of measurement methods, source emission characterizations, and data collection research in atmospheric sciences, physical, chemical, biological, toxicological, and human and ecological exposure development, evaluation, and application of air quality simulation modeling.
- The candidate must have experience working in and managing specialized laboratories and machine shops, including fabrication machine shops, Metrology laboratories, and other analytical and microbiological laboratories.
- The candidate must possess excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate across teams to drive innovation.
- The candidate must have a minimum of several years of relevant experience, with the specific number of years depending on the position level (implied senior-level experience).
- The candidate must have the ability to perform research and technical activities related to atmospheric sciences, physical, chemical, biological, toxicological, and exposure assessments, including data collection and analysis.
- The candidate must be able to work in environments that may include specialized laboratories and machine shops, with the physical ability to perform tasks associated with such environments.
- The candidate must have the ability to develop, design, and execute technical research projects related to environmental science and engineering.
- The candidate must have a strong problem-solving ability and excellent communication skills to effectively convey technical information through reports and plans.
