Job Description
The Engineering or Science Group Manager Department Head oversees and leads a team of scientists, engineers, and technicians in developing and executing technical research projects related to environmental science, atmospheric sciences, and air quality modeling for the EPA, ensuring high-quality deliverables, laboratory management, and compliance with safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and lead a team of scientists, engineers, and technicians in developing, designing, and executing technical research projects.
- Manage specialized laboratories and machine shops, including fabrication, metrology, analytical, and microbiological labs.
- Develop and implement strategic plans, allocate resources, prioritize projects, and foster team development.
- Ensure high-quality delivery of technical solutions and compliance with EPA health, safety, and quality standards.
- Act as a liaison between upper management, cross-functional teams, and stakeholders.
- Prepare work plans, quality assurance project plans, health and safety plans, and technical reports.
Requirements
- The qualified individual must be highly motivated with the skills to prioritize, perform, and communicate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Oversee and lead a team of scientists, engineers, and technicians in the development, design, and execution of technical research projects for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency s EPA s Office of Research and Development.
- Manage research activities including decontamination and consequence management research, development and validation of measurement methods, source emission characterizations, and data collection research in areas of atmospheric sciences, physical, chemical, biological, toxicological, and human and ecological exposure development, evaluation, and application of air quality simulation modeling in the Fluid Modeling Facility Meteorological Wind Tunnel and other related research activities.
- Manage specialized laboratories and machine shops including fabrication machine shops, Metrology laboratory, and other specialized analytical and microbiological laboratories.
- Be responsible for strategic planning, resource allocation, project prioritization, and team development to ensure high-quality delivery of technical solutions.
- Act as a key liaison between upper management, cross-functional teams, and stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with EPA on-site health and safety standards and quality assurance standards and best practices.
- Write work plans, quality assurance project plans, health and safety plans, and reports for work performed by ERG.
