Job Description

The Thermal Spray Technician Level I is responsible for applying thermal spray coatings to turbine engine components using manual and CNC techniques, following safety and quality standards, and gaining skills through extensive training in a modern, climate-controlled facility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow safety protocols and company safety policies.
  • Interpret work instructions and shop drawings to apply the correct thermal spray process.
  • Inspect, clean, mask, and prepare parts for coating.
  • Set up and operate thermal spray equipment according to work instructions.
  • Select and apply specified coatings manually or via CNC processes.
  • Handle coatings in accordance with safety, quality, and security policies.
  • Remove masking and prepare parts for subsequent processes after coating.
  • Maintain and perform daily checks on equipment, recording logs as required.
  • Conduct process tests and use gauges to ensure correct coating application.

Requirements

  • A minimum of six months to one year of experience in the thermal spray process.
  • Ability to use measuring devices such as scales, micrometers, dial indicators, and go/no-go gauges.
  • Experience in reading shop drawings and work instructions and documenting work performed.
  • Previous experience in the operation of overhead cranes.
  • General experience using files and other hand tools to remove sharp edges from metal surfaces.
  • High school or technical school graduate or equivalent.
  • Familiar with or able to learn basic shop math.
  • Basic knowledge of computers and standard software programs.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Must be able to use hand tools and have good hand-eye coordination.
  • Ability to work independently and perform the job with minimum supervision.
  • Able to interpret and follow work instructions and shop drawings to ensure the proper thermal spray process is applied to the correct part features.
  • Inspect and prepare parts for thermal spray coatings, including cleaning, masking, blasting, and other processes as required.
  • Set up and operate thermal spray equipment in accordance with work instructions, including manual and CNC processes.
  • Select and apply specified coatings in accordance with work instructions.
  • Handle all coatings in accordance with established safety, quality, stock control, and security policies.
  • Remove masking after coating and prepare parts for the next process.
  • Maintain equipment as required, including performing daily checks and completing logbooks or records.
  • Frequently perform process tests for quality control.
  • Use handheld gauges to measure parts during the coating process to ensure correct amount of coating is applied.
  • Follow established safety protocols and guidelines to ensure full compliance with company safety policies and procedures.
  • Work in varying positions, standing and/or sitting for portions of the shift, and be capable of moving parts weighing up to 50 pounds using hoists, slings, carts, or other handling methods.
  • Pre-employment testing including fitness for duty testing, respirator fit test, and a vision exam.
  • Use of safety and personal protective equipment such as ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, and TyVek jumpsuits as required.
