Job Description

The NDT X-Ray Technician is responsible for inspecting aerospace and industrial engine components using radiographic nondestructive testing methods to detect defects, ensure quality, and maintain compliance with industry standards under the supervision of a Level III inspector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, and standardize x-ray equipment to inspect parts.
  • Interpret and evaluate radiographic images for acceptance or rejection.
  • Document inspection findings accurately for service history and repair records.
  • Develop work instructions based on approved procedures with Level III approval.
  • Conduct system performance checks of x-ray equipment according to standards.
  • Choose appropriate radiographic techniques and generate images as instructed.
  • Verify that surface conditions do not cause false positives during inspection.
  • Identify and describe defects, including their location, size, and orientation.
  • Follow safety protocols and guidelines to ensure compliance with safety policies.

Requirements

  • Three to five years of experience as a Level II in NDT methods for which qualification and or certification shall be required.
  • The ability to interpret and follow written and verbal instructions accurately, including reading and interpretation of shop drawings.
  • Previous experience in the use of overhead cranes.
  • Shown a previous ability to successfully pass skill level tests in other trades or disciplines.
  • Possess a current IRRSP card and or the ability to pass the IRRSP certification class and radiation safety class.
  • High school or technical school graduate or equivalent.
  • Some college level or similar courses in areas such as, but not limited to, metallurgy, welding engineering and manufacturing processes helpful.
  • Basic knowledge of computers and standard software programs.
  • Previous experience and or the ability to perform mathematical operations, including working with decimals, fractions, and basic shop math.
  • Previous experience or familiarity with measuring gages such as calipers and micrometers.
  • Ability to conduct system performance checks in accordance with the applicable process standard.
  • Ability to develop work instructions from approved general procedures, requiring final approval by a Level III certified in the method.
  • Ability to choose the applicable technique and generate the images as instructed.
  • Ability to inspect and evaluate prepared images for acceptance or rejection based on provided criteria.
  • Ability to define the type of defect when possible, including describing location, size, and orientation, and plotting indications on drawings when provided.
  • Work in varying positions, including standing and sitting, and move parts weighing up to 50 pounds using hoists, slings, carts, or other handling methods.
  • Occasionally use powered and hand-held tools.
  • Meet minimum vision standards for qualification, including color perception and near vision, as determined by pre-employment vision testing.
  • Follow general shop safety procedures including the use of safety glasses, safety toe shoes, and hearing protection when required.
  • Obtain supervisory prior permission for all shift early reports due to the complexity of the processing of parts.
