Job Description
An experienced Manual VTL Machinist Technician responsible for machining turbine engine components to precise specifications, working in a modern facility alongside a team of skilled machinists, and performing setup, operation, inspection, and finishing tasks in the aerospace and marine industries.
Key Responsibilities
- Follow work instructions and use gauges and tools to inspect parts and determine material removal requirements.
- Operate machines to achieve specified dimensions on turbine engine components.
- Use inspection gauges and hand tools to ensure dimensional accuracy of machined parts.
- Identify and correct machining issues related to tools, holders, collets, and chucks.
- Record inspection and machining findings accurately in documentation.
- Perform finishing operations such as deburring, tapping, honing, and bench work as needed.
- Participate in training and provide expertise in on-the-job training for other machinists.
Requirements
- Five plus years of experience in the operation of Manual Turret Lathe VTL equipment in a job shop environment with first article experience.
- Creative problem-solving skills related to machine setups, VTL and lathe tooling, securing and fixturing of workpieces.
- Firm understanding of GD&T, critical dimensioning, the relationship between dimensions, and technical drawing reading and interpretation.
- The ability to indicate fixtures and parts to achieve required runouts, including understanding timing or rotational values, creating machining starting points based on existing features, and creating a flat plane for machining.
- Rework experience in machining processes.
- Technical high school diploma, machinist trade school, or equivalent work experience.
- Set-up experience with tooling and fixtures, with the ability to follow instructions per technical drawings or work instructions.
- Familiarity with shop math principles and basic trigonometry.
- Proficiency in the use of hand-held power tools, files, and skills in assembly and disassembly.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand English, and communicate effectively with other employees.
- Pre-employment testing requirements that may include fitness for duty testing and a vision exam.
- Ability to stand and/or sit for portions of the shift, and move parts weighing up to 50 pounds using hoists, slings, carts, or other handling methods.
- Occasional use of powered and hand-held tools during work.
